hi all i just had a call from my sister her 4 yr old lab is unable to get up,and when she dose shes very, very shakey,my sister said that when shes laying down her left hand side her back leg goes straight in the air and he will not stop shaking, shes rung her vet who can come and see her at the end of his surgery, anyone have any idea what this could or maybe many thanks.

i dont really know, but it sound like a stroke, hope she feels better soon, let us know how she gets on.

Tell your sister to get the dog to the vets. She needs urgent medical attention and waiting until the vet arrives may be too late. The dog may need help via equipment etc at the vets so would more than likely have to be taken in anyway.

I am not sure what is wrong but I would never wait if something like that happened to one of my girls!

Lets us know what happens

. Unfortunaly this sounds like a stroke to me:( I had one many years ago who was unfortunate to have two strokes a couple of days apart its horrible . put her somewhere nice in a very quite place feel to see if shes cold or hot and put a blanket over her if shes cold and ring the vet to come out and see her. it could be a trapted nerve but by the sounds of what your saying she is really shakey, she might of even had a fit of some kind. anyway let us know what it actully is and how shes doing Lady xxxxx

well my sister has just called not good news her lab has hd and arthuritis (cant spell) and shes only just 4 yrs old she has to take her back to vets on friday to start treatment, one question can hd shorten a dogs life? vet said there nothing they can do apart from painkillers
- By gundogsrbest [gb] Date 07.10.03 18:23 UTC
bruno the pet rotti at work was diagonosed with hd earlier this year, also zac one of our gsds has been diagonosed with hd and muscle wastage he has now haad his work cut down much to his disgust. Thay are both 4 years old
both dogs are on rimadyl tablets twice daily, although bruno in the summer only needed one tablet daily, they are also on the glucosmine sulphate/chroditron (sp?) 500mg tablets one daily available from holland and barrat (vet advised that the complex was better than the glucosmine sulphate alone)
you wouldnt know there was anything wrong with them they both exercise normally but as i said before zacs work has been cut down he now only gets transported in the vans and not hte jeeps obviusly because of the height difference.
The only problem bruno has is the cold mornings he wont go out until its warmed up :) and if its raining he can be found hiding in the hallway.
You could try hydrotherapy to help the joints, and we also found with our old arthritic cat that the magnetic collars worked a treat
hope all this helps

Hi there. Do you know how he diagnosed this and what treatment he is proposing to do ?

Do HD and Arthritis explain the shaking episode? Were there any signs at all before this? I think I would want to be very certain that the diagnosis is correct before embarking on any form of treatment.

I hope all goes well

Excatly why I asked the question above as it seems a strange diagnosis and was interested how the vet came to that conclusion ! :)

do you think you ought to get a second opinon, as i agree with the others, i know to my cost how guilty you feel if you do not get a second opinion if you are in the slighest doubt.i kept asking my vets to refer my old cocker to the royal vet college for a skin condtion as she had previously been under rvc in her younger days, but they kept putting it off saying we should try just a couple more things first.that went on for 6 months before eventutaly i took to a heompathic vet with some succes but by then things had got too bad, and there was nothing more to be done for her except make her remaaining days comfy. if only id been a bit more pushy and demanded rather than asked!
