Hmmm. A designer dog; must tell mine that; I am sure they will have a good laugh. By the way what exactly IS a "designer dog"?

Weimaraners are not "blue" or "lilac" they are grey. Blue Weimaraners are a "fault" which, like other faults in other breeds, is being deliberately bred for in the US. Blue is a disqualifying fault in any country's standard.

Good morning Allyson hope all is well...I know that pictures don't do the subject justice, however you did see the pictures of Jake my weimie
(so called blue) what color would you say Jake is? perhaps dark grey? although sometimes depending on the lighting it appears to have a blueish tone to it what you think? if you care to elaborate a bit please do so.
Have a great day.
best regards
Vic
P.S. I believe I sent you pictures but now I'm not so sure please advise.

Hiya Vic, received the pictures; From the photos I would say that his colour would not be acceptable in the breed ring!

Thank you Allyson for your quick response do you think he's a dark grey or blueish gray sometimes I can't even tell myself...anyway it's really not important I love him and he's a great little guy. Incidentally how does one place those happy faces on their posts? I cant seem
to find a link for these cute little things.
Sincerely
Vic

I too was under the impression that the weimaraner colouration was recessive, and that a cross between a weim and anything else would not produce grey pups? Any weim folk know if this is correct?

Never seen a weimi cross that was grey yet!

Thanks Tohme for the clarification - Grey is how the colour is described in the Weimaraner but my question was what are the colour genetics - is it recessive red (liver) and recessive dilute. If so do both these genes also occur in the Labrador? If they do it would be possible to produce "Grey" (silver/lilac etc.) labradors by selecting for colour. If these two genes do not occur in the labrador it would be necessary to import the colours from another breed. So, can any Weimaraner breeders confirm the inheritance of colour in the breed and can any labrador breeders confirm if the same genes occur in the labrador?

Hi there when I purchased my weimi I saw the litter 6 I believe in a picture and two out of the 6 were definetly darker than the other 4
I called the breeder in Texas and I asked why the 2 were much darker she responded by saying that they were blue I'm so tired of this color issue that I really don't care anymore weather they're pink, purple, yellow etc.etc.etc. all I know is that if I like a certain dog in my case a Lab
or a Weimi I will buy it and that's all there's to it so in any case I bought one of the darker gray and we're 100% happy with him.

technically I believe the true grey is dilute liver, whilst the blue is dilute black. You cannot produce a "blue" weimaraner from "grey" parents. HTH

Hi Allyson if you read one of my earlier posting I said that I saw the litter of 6 in a photo while they were feeding and two of the 6 were a much darker grey so we decided on one of them but thank you much on your informative statement.

TOHME,
What you say would tie in with what I understood to be the case. Genetic Lilac (called "grey" in the case of the Weimaraner ) is the result of the recessive Liver (also called Red, Brown, Chocolate...) gene and the recessive Dilute gene. Dominant Black with recessive Dilute produces Blue (also called slate and sometimes "Grey" - very confusing) which will be quite different. It would be the case that Lilac ("grey") parents could never produce anything other than Lilac offspring as they only have Liver and Dilute genes to give to their offspring. "Blue" parents would be able to produce "Lilac" offspring as the recessive genes would be hidden but available.
Thank you for the information.
The question still remains - are "Liver" and "Dilute" genes available in the Labrador Retriever, if so "Lilac" (Grey, Silver...) Labradors could be produced without any outcrossing.

Thank you so much for the information I must read up a bit on genetics and breeding so that I can have an idea when the issue comes up
Sincerely
