Hi all. I was just wondering everyone opinion on what the most obedient breeds are. I realise that alot of it comes down to training, but also alot depends on the breed of dog itself, whats in it nature. For example i read that dobermans are a very obedient breed that were bread to interact with humans, and for this reason if very disciplined and will not wander. Where as a Great Pyrenees is a very independent dog, therefore can be alot stubborn and harder to train, also some are not to good of the leash as they may wander. So whats everyone elses opinion on the most obedient breed.

The most obedient breed? How long have you got and how long is that bit of string?????????
For police dog work I think most would say the GSD. Very obedient and large enough to hold the strongest criminal, capable of following a track and fearless in conditions which would stop a lesser dog in its tracks!
Just try watching a Sheep Dog Trial and you would come away with the impression of complete control the shepherd has over the Working Sheepdog, trained to a find degree for control at a distance.
To watch a team of Pointers working a moor is a joy to behold! And nothing could compete with them in those conditions.
For Competitive obedience there is nothing to get close to a Border Collie/Working sheepdog although I do firmly believe the rounds these days favour these dogs rather more than the patens set years ago.
So now on to my own favourite, the Labrador working in a Field Trial or picking up on a shoot. Obedience to the whistle, turning to hand signals and stopping on command, but also able to work under it's own initative in conditions where it's handler is unsighted.
As I said, how much time have you got? Without defining what you mean by obedient the answer is impossible!

HEHE point taken :). I suppose i would mean obedient in a family environment.
PS. My friend has a lab, came from apperantly the top breeder in scotland. The thing that dog can do, it amazes me everytime.

Just wait, hopefully in a few years to come the Spanish Water Dog will show some of these breeds. I have never really done much obedience etc. but the little I have done with this breed has impressed me.
I remember when we first brought them into the country, we'd had them in for just over a year and went to a gundog test, at the start of the day everyone was laughing at these medium sized hairy dogs, but at the end of the day their laughter turned to silence, not bad, seeing that all of us who were handling our dogs had never done anything like it before. The gundog people have supported us ever since and I'm looking forward to how the pups in my last litter do as they are nearly all going to do gundog work.
I've also had a police dog trainer who has said that there character is very much like a GSD.
I wish I had the time to train one of mine in the way that some of the working people, maybe one day. Hopefully someone will.

I'm afraid there is a hands down winner for me. It has to be the German Shepherd, not that I am biased or anything. lol.

Have to agree there Lisa, having owned various breeds nothing comes close to the GSD. Ingrid
Dobermanns - obedient !!!!!!
Hummm - I hope to work my young bitch in obedience competition later this year and it is hard work (along with a lot of play), they were originally designed as a personal guard dog but most of this has been bred out of them to make them safer in todays society.
Dobes are a velcro dog and love being with you and are intelligent - prefer to use that intelligence for their own purposes rather than yours though.

Another breed i LOVE apart from my Bullies but sadly cant have one at the moment is the Giant Schnauzer, these are highly intelligent....

Well, for me it is the Belgian Tervueren - but llike all intelligent breeds who have great potential for obedience, they also have huge potential for mischief when not mentally stimulated. A BSd who is not mentally stimultated will find his/her own outlets, which will include inappropriate barking, chasing ( a great favourite - the most importatn thing for me was/is getting my dogs back when out on country walks) and inappropriate guarding behaviour.
They also have a very quick reaction speed, physically and mentally, and add to that an active defence reflex and any owner's work is cut out :) But there is no other dog in the world for me - properly loved and trained they are a joy and source of great pride :) :) :).

i agree with diane that swd are quick to learn, and want to please you.i have only had mine for 8 weeks, she learn alot quicker than my flatcoats which i have had over the last 14years,my husband trains them for gundog work and she is a naturel retriever, again doing things more than the 2year old flatcoat, but i got to learn a lot more about this new breed, but it is great having her,she off to her first match tonigth so we see if she has leaned her stands over the last three weeks to see if she dose it to night.

I would tend to agree that the potentially most trainable breeds can turn into the most obedient dogs, but they also have huge potential to be quite the opposite if not trained properly. My Elkhounds are more Obedient on our walks than many of the dogs of breeds that are classed as Obedient!!!! the trick is to know what your breed was bred to do and train accordingly, be led by your heart unless you really require a slavishly obedient dogs, as most breeds bar a few exceptions can be trained toi be obedient in average domestic setting.
