Topic Dog Boards / General / Great dane bitches or bitches in general

As i have never ever owned a bitch, and i'm now ashamed to admit that our bitch wasn't the one we wanted. She had a brother which is what we wanted but he was taken and after a week or so deliberation we decided to take the bitch (Dolly).
I could never have asked for a more loving dog, are bitches generally like this? She thrives on company and isn't really fussed over other dogs, she will play etc but is more interested in me and my daughter.
If as a family we are walking down the road and one of us is lagging behind Dolly will stop and wait for that person. It's like we should all stay together lol. She is constantly watching us, yet we had a Dane dog years ago and he couldn't care less, i would be on one side of the park and he would walk round the other side.

Is it just the breed or bitches in general i would be interested of other opinions....

Sarah.
p.s My father always bought dogs never once a bitch, so i grew up knowing only dogs.

That sounds very much like my dalmatian bitches! They get very agitated if we (humans!) get separated when we're out together with the dogs. They never stray far from us when they're off the lead either.

So to me she sounds like a normal bitch! That's part of the reason why I prefer them.

Bit of both. I have a dane bitch and she is very family orientated - won't go near other dogs, doesn't run off, hates strangers. Having had bitches before I see typical bitch traits in her, but the majority of it is because she is a dane, I feel. She and Willis (male dane) share a lot of similar qualities, but go their own ways when it comes down to the dog/bitch thing :)

I am not complaining as i find it lovely, Dolly does walk off the lead and doesn't stray either, whether she will when she's matured i don't know..
How are 2 bitches together? Is it better to have 2 bitches or 1 dog/ 1 bitch? We would like another Dane in a year or so and i always though to get a dog for her?

I've always had bitches in the past - it's only in the last few years I've added a couple of dogs in as well! My dogs at the moment are mother and pups from various litters - one bitch and two dogs - and the mum still tells them what to do and they listen to her, so no squabbles there! In the past I've bought bitch puppies in at various intervals, to mix in with other bitches, and again there's been no problems. Maybe I've been lucky!
