I have always owned dogs but only one at a time, an old lady was given a jack russell by her son but she is ill now. I have been picking it up to take it for a walk with my dog (no problems) but it has never been to my house.
Anyway the lady says would i like to take him as she doesn't think she will ever be fit enough to walk him like he's used to.
I love the little thing,(year old) but i am wary about having it with my dog in the home, my dog is very very spoilt, and generally does what it pleases, I'd hate to think mine was having it's nose pushed out and ended up aggressive which she isn't now (very daft as a brush).
My dog is a 7month old Great Dane bitch.

mmm tricky one. From my own personal point of view i don't think i could get a second dog, purely because Bradley will always be my favourite. We spend alot of time together larking about together and he gets ample doggy contact over the park, I don't want bradley to feel pushed out and equally i don't want to be pushed out as he to has the best i can offer.
Also my partner wants something with two legs.
I think if the current situation suits both parties why change whats not broken. Company for the old lady and a doggy mate for your dog.

I think you've answered your own question. You obviously were not going to get another dog, and you've reservations about having one. It seems you feel responsible for this ladies dog. Why not just offer to help find a good home if the lady can't cope?

I think dogs work better in multiples as they keep each other company and when you are walking they often play chase & get even more excercise.

If they are left alone, they occupy each other instead of using walls & stairs!!

Try having them together over night for a trial. If your dog gets on with the JR well enough now, As long as they both have their own space available, I reckon it would be OK. Quite apart from which they are both still young enough not to have too many hang ups yet.

It wouldn't eat as much as your Dane:D And burglars could have their ankles nipped ans well as their bums bitten.

My vote is to go for it. good luck

Ahhh very funny Julia....
I am moving to Wales in December and there are no parks so it will be public footpaths and i think it's highly unlikely i will come across as many dogs daily as i do now, so the JR would make an ideal companion for my Dane.
But someone just said, my dog may favour the new dog more than me? Oh i'd be devastated......
I think the JR would be more than happy just to have the bits falling out of my Danes mouth when she eats lol.

Hi there, I'm in a similar situation, just round the other way from yourself :) I have Baillie, who is my golden retriever and my baby, he's six now, and a week today, I'm picking up my Dane puppy, Diesel.
I have taken Baillie and met lots of Danes, different ages and sizes, to see how he would react - he's a very placid, laid back dog - nothing phases him, and we didn't encounter any problems, so we booked our puppy and in a week he comes home. Obviously it'll be different with the puppy being suddenly on his territory, but I think common sense should prevail over most problems that we should have. At the end of the day, I chose to get another dog, because I felt that my family and I, could offer a loving home to a beautiful breed of dog that I've wanted for as long as I can remember:) And into the bargain, Baillie hopefully will have a new best pal ;) I think, you have to make the decision , you know your dog better than anyone else. Why not take the JR on a trial basis, maybe a couple of nights, see how you get on and take it from there - You'll be a strange sight on walks :D Talk about little and large !

like you Sharon my dog is my baby and i really love her to bits (Danes are very very loving). Anyway my father retired last year and after speaking to him he said he will take the JR for a trial period which is good of him as he never wanted a dog after having them all his life he now wanted freedom to go on holiday etc (Oooops lol).
When you get your dane you will see how close they are to you, they adore you and are very loyal.
Mine actually doesn't think it's a dog and unfortunately we don't treat it like one. So it lounges on the settee and sleeps in bed with us. lol.
Beware !!! Once a dane owner always a dane owner!!

Sarah.
p.s Wait until you see the Zoomies !! Hysterically funny

Hiya, that's great - at least you'll be relaxed enough to know that the little dog is with someone who'll take good care of them and you'll also know that your dad will have some company - and you get to see him/her whenever you like :)
As for the puppy, I haven't seen him since he was 4wks old, we drove down south to see him, so I got some piccies today of him, and he is sooo gorgeous - I can't wait until Friday :D
I'll let you know how I get on - what's the zoomies ???

the zoomies are when they get a mad 5minutes running madly, a small dog yeah....fine..... but a Dane with gangly legs running round like a tornado......lethal , but exceptionally funny..

Hi Sarah - I have 2 danes - what colour is your girl and what breeding? Whats she called? :)
- By bailliesmum [gb] Date 04.10.03 12:52 UTC
Hi Guys,
I think that I've sent each of you a piccie of him. You can email me if you don't get it and I'll do it again :)
Do any of you have any tips on how to introduce Diesel to Baillie? We won't get back until early on the Saturday morning, so my brother is going to keep Baillie overnight, as I didn't want lots of crying and barking at that time in the morning. Any tips????

Hi Chloe, my baby is a fawn, she is flipping lovely......she comes from well known breeders found on this site.
Don't know if a can say the name?

Sarah.
- By mygirl [gb] Date 04.10.03 16:45 UTC
Oh her name is Dolly, i wanted Lucy lol but her registered name was Dolly Daydream and the breeders had been calling her Dolly so we didn't change it.
- By bailliesmum [gb] Date 04.10.03 19:30 UTC
