Topic Dog Boards / General / New Dalmatian puppy - any advice??
- By Stu [gb] Date 29.09.03 21:57 UTC
Hi all,

We pick up our 8 week old dalmatian puppy on thursday. Does any one have any do's or dont's that may be of use?

We currently have two cats and hope that they will all get along ok.

the breeder has recomended Burns food for him as it is low in protein, has anyone tried this or can anyone recommend a different brand as I think it will be difficult to get it near to us?

thanks

Hi,
I have 4 dalmatians, so I congratulate you on your good sense! Burns is certainly a good food - and I gather they will deliver to your door. If not, most good petfood stores will order it for you.

Do's and dont's - I would recommend you buy a copy of "The Perfect Puppy" by Gwen Bailey, and "the Pet-owner's Guide to the Dalmatian" by Geraldine Gregory. They should see you through most problems.

I'm always available when a sympathetic ear is needed - click on my name and you can email me I'm always interested in where people get their puppies from!

Good luck!
:)

Hi

Good luck with the pup. Your breeder has recommended a good food - you can order it online: Burns Online and they will deliver it to your door. I wouldn't change it if I were you, it would be a shame to disrupt your puppy from his routine.

Don't over-exersize your pup, socialise him as much as possible as soon as possible, and enjoy!

What are you going to call him?

Chloe :)

thanks for the replies and help.

will try to socialise him asap. We desperatly want him to turn out to be everything a dally is supposed to be with heaps of character!

as for the name, we have been deciding for weeks now and the only name we agree on is 'Harvey'. the problem is there is already another dal at our local vet with the same name and another pup from the same litter is going to be called Harvey too, we sort of wanted something a bit different but have trawled for net for hours looking @ dog names and still cant agree :)

I reckon "Domino"
- By Carla Date 30.09.03 09:06 UTC
I like "Dennis the Dalmatian" :D
- By Stu [gb] Date 30.09.03 20:36 UTC
Thanks for the suggestions... I quite like 'Domino' - only problem is we have gone for liver spotted! We did consider calling him cocoa, but used to know of a liver dally called that, so it would almost seem like copying :S

How about Pongo. Or "Mister"

- By luvly [gb] Date 01.10.03 22:29 UTC
Well i like choc chip cookies ummmmm but ermm how about Dick lol as in spotted dick , now im talking about food again just ignore me:d
i Have no idea i like the name toby but i think theres loads of dogs called that how about smarty lol woops did it again;)
- By cissy Date 02.10.03 11:20 UTC
hmmm, ok so not Domino then how about "Pinto" - meaning "spotted" ??? :)

And from the type of horse or pony marked with "patches of white and another color [not black]". I know these are back to front colours for your Dal but then I like twisted names [my corgi Lascaux is named after prehistoric cave paintings of red and white horses/bulls with short legs !]
- By Maiko [au] Date 02.10.03 07:48 UTC
I'd call him Cadbury or Hershey :D
- By Stu [gb] Date 02.10.03 21:47 UTC
Well we picked him up today and he is just the cutest thing!!! Although I have just had to go back downstairs to him as he was whimpering and squealing at being left on his own!!
It's funny because when I put him to bed he couldnt yet climb stairs but after 10 mins on his own he had climbed to the top and was pawing at the bannister gate whining! I had to sit with him for a few mins until he went to sleep :d

Theres some realy good suggestions of names, so far we are torn between Harvey, Jasper or Monte but we are going to wait a day or two to decide.

Hi - congratulations on your new arrival! I would personally put a stair gate at the bottom of the stairs so that he can't climb up yet - it's a long way to fall down!

I wanted to call our liver dog Jasper when it became clear nobody was going to buy him - but he'd got used to being called "The Piglet" by then, so Piglet he remains!

you say nobody was going to buy him ? why?

Hi Lucy,
One of the problems of breeding your own litter is that you don't necessarily get to keep the one you want! I wanted a bitch from my last litter- but so did everyone else! I could have sold the bitches 5 times over, but I didn't have a single dog enquiry till all the girls had gone and I still had the two boys. The first dog enquiry didn't want a liver (by then I'd decided the black was staying because he was bilateral and better marked, and the liver was unilateral), and the only other enquiry was at 12 weeks, and the bloke asked "How much has the price come down to?" So I told him where to go, and Piglet is still with us! Too softhearted, that's me!

unfortunately the banister gate will only go at the top of the stairs as they are a funny shape - but its only 6 steps ahould he tumble down. He's actually very proficient at going up and down them now anyway :D

We decided on Jasper in the end - it seems to suit him and is a little more unusual than Harvey.

He seems to be very mardy at the moment - just sleeps a lot and doesnt like going outside, but I suppose its pretty overwhelming as he's not been here 2 days yet and everyone has visited him, he's also just had his 1st jab at the vets :(
