hi charlie just a thought i always give my dogs arnica after theyve had a knock or twist so fgar i think it has saved us about 4 or 5 visits to the vets. try giving the 6c 9available at sainsburys or holland and barretts) one every 15min or so for two to three hours then 3 times a day it really doesnt do any harm ive see the results first hand when my cocker had a masive heaotoma(ear flap swelling)our vets wated to operate and drain but as she very poorly thru a non conected skin prob took her to a hoeompathy vet who give her arinica amongst other things to cut a long story short molly totallly recovered from the swelling without the need for surgery and i was converted.

Hi Charley,
Ditto to what Dawnbee has just said. Homeopathic remedies are the first thing I'd reach for. I keep a basic "first aid kit" and then buy the rest as I need them (for use on non life threatening stuff obviously) . MUCH cheaper than the vets and no yukky drugs too.

Hope you're both feeling better soon.

Kath.

good idea that first aid kit what would you put in it? and what for?
- By kath_barr [gb] Date 02.10.03 07:14 UTC
Hi Lovelylady,

I think these would possibly cover most emergencies ( but let me know if I've missed anything).

Arnica... Bruises, shock, sprains/strains of muscles/joints, bites/stings, injuries, effects of surgery, whelping.

Aconite... Shock, sudden acute infections.

Hypericum... Injuries, especially in areas with lots of nerves (eg cut/crushed paws).

Apis... Bee/wasp stings, watery swellings, burns, blisters, allergic reactions.

Rhus Tox... Sprains/strains of muscles/joints, skin rashes.

Symphytum (comfrey)... Broken bones (only use when Vet has set bone in proper position!), bruised bones.

Thanks ill print that out and go shopping:) thanks for your help:)Ooo just thought how do i know how much to give?does it say on the back of the packets?

Hi L/Lady, if your thinking of using h/pathy you might be as well to invest in a good book or 2 to go with emergency kit. The link below gives a good guide for starter kit & suggests a couple of books. I have both of them & they`re very good.

Christine's right, you need a basic guide first. The instructions are usually useless on the packaging and you really need to understand the way homeopathy works to get the best result. It's totally different to the way drugs work.

I haven't got either of those books (my dog book is "Homeopathic Medicine for Dogs" by H.G. Wolff), but I have got "The treatment of Cattle" and "A Vet. Materia Medica and Clinical Repertory" (list of medicines and uses) both by George Macleod and his dog book is in the same series so it will be good.

Assuming the prices haven't gone up the two Macleod books were £8.95 each and the Wolff book is £14.25 but I managed to get it from cygnus books for £10 (and then they knocked £1 off!)

http://www.cygnus-books.co.uk/mind_body_spirit_books/homoeopathic_medicine_dogs.htm

(sorry...copy and paste cos I can't get the flippin link thingy to work!)

They might seem a lot but when you consider what you spend at the vet!!! well worth it.

Oooo yes I`ve got G. Macleods M/Medica as well, forgot about that! Theres a good selection out there now & easy obtainable on the net or dog shows so you`ll be spoilt for choice :)
I would never treat my dogs for anything other than every day injuries/common illnesses or emergencies without the advice of my vet, alopathic or h/pathic. You need to know what your doing with both of them & they can work side by side :)

another good book is 'heal your dog the natural way' by richard allport who oringinally was a 'tradinational' vet who now has a complementary practice in north london let me know if anyone wants the adress, icant recommend him enough. you can also get an emgerency first aid kit fom them complete with all instructions and guide to usage.

Hi Dawn,
out of interest (or noseyness!) do you know what's in their first aid kit? I think we ought to start a homeopathy thread, we seem to have hijacked this one!

Charley, how is your dog doing now and are you feeling any better yourself? I hope you're both OK.

hi kath my first aid kit containsthe 30c potency of pulsatilla, cantharis, hepar sulph, arsen alb,nux vom, sulphur, hypericum, aconite, arnica, and a hypericum tincture, unfortunatly ive lost my sheets which tells you the dosage etc which came with it, normally the ones you see in the shops are the 6c potency sp be careful. ill ring for a new sheet on monday, one of those things that always getting forgotton, but i have richards book so i refer to that most of the time.if you want therir phone no, get back to me
- By kath_barr [gb] Date 04.10.03 10:07 UTC
Thanks Dawn,
Yes, I've got all those,(except the Arsen alb.) though it's interesting that it's so different to my choices for emergencies, but you can substitute some for others as all of them have multiple uses ( another reason to get a book, it's impossible to memorise them all). Usually lower potecies are for chronic/non urgent cases and higher potencies for emergencies. I use 6c, 30c and even up to 200c. but more important is getting the right remedy and the right frequency . For instance, in an emergency you might give it every half hour but a chronic case might only need once or twice a day. Also the dosage is the same whether it's for a Yorkshire Terrier or a Great Dane, their size doesn't matter. Giving more tablets doesn't means it's a higher dose e.g. if you give 1, 2, or even 10 tablets at once that would still only be 1 dose, if you gave 1 tablet 3 times, spaced apart, that would be 3 doses. I hope all this makes sense!!
