This is a question that has puzzled me...........

If you have done all the relavent health screenings (if it is possible in the UK, as some rare/import breeds are not required to do this!), how close would you go??

Thanks.

A lot of rare/import breeds do, even if there isn't a problem in the breed!!! I've done a grandad/grand-daughter mating although I wdnt. do it again, but 2 of the 4 turned out well, but I wdn't. do it again.

Though there again, in other well known breeds this is done quite often. Just because we have rare/import breeds doesn't mean that we don't try and make sure that we don't come across any problems. Of course as in all breeds there are some that don't care but I wd. think most of us do!

I personally dont like to see anything closer than the third generation. Line breeding is a useful tool used in moderation but used to excess can cause trouble. You cannot add to a line without going outside that line, you can only get whats in the genes and no more. What you can do is to bring out any worms in the background.

perrodeagu,
Out of interest what happened to the 2 pups that didn't turn out well? Did they not look normal or something?
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 04.10.03 09:05 UTC
No they looked normal and were lovely girls. Unfortunately other things happened during the pregnancy which didn't help and were beyond my control but of course you always blame yourself and think what if.

No have to say in reality I'm pleased with what was produced but I'm very fussy. Two out of 4 were more than excellent and most breeders would be happy with this in any litter actually I am too really.

I dont think its right to breed with any close relatives, say you did end up breeding a litter and several turned out to be deformed or have lots of health problems like so many do. do you think its fair? this is a question to ask yourself.. you could breed a healthy litter or take the risk. its 50/50 really
personaly the pain the dogs "could" go threw isent worth the risk to me.
I think you are or want to be a reputable breeder who wouldent dream of letting a owner have take on health problems and extra vet bills your puppys could possibly need.
also if you breed two healthy dogs it dosent mean you will get healthy pups.ive looked into this for a freind of mine her dog's mother was closely bred and her dog has all sorts of problems.

If i were you id wait around for a little while longer and breed properly, and in the breeding world im sure you will earn a good name if you turn out great pups.
This is a big reason why puppy farms go so wrong , other then the way they treat the dogs. and i hope you dont follow suit and take this aboad
If you need any other help post a message and we will all try and help
