We are about to get a rescue Lurcher (18mths. dog) and wonder if anyone has advice as to how we treat it (apart from the love and respect it will get ) , re-train it, discourage it from regarding two guinea pigs as dinner / sport and whether it will need a coat for the winter ?

I'm sure these are all basic questions but having only had border collies and retrievers before we are a bit at sea over a Lurcher ....

Thanks very much

Hi Guest...

I have a lurcher, adn have loved them for a looooooong time...and have some experience with rescue dogs....if you click on my name above this post, you can email me.....

Lurchers are not difficult dogs, but it can depend on the breeding really........dont expect them to be lazy like retired greyhounds are...that is a myth!!!!!
As far as your guinea pigs are concerned, prevention first, training the dog comes later!.....whether it will need a coat for winter depends on its own coat really....i have a rough coated beddy/whip/grey/beardie who's coat is fairly open and wooly, very absorbent adn lets the wind in, so he wears a coat.

Why not join the board and give us more information about your new dog.
