One of the reasons that breed rescues were given short shift was that this woman had been buying two and three puppies at a time from so called breeders and meeting them on car parks to do so. She didnt want papers but has kept all reciepts from them. Maybe a change on how some breeders operate is needed. I personally feel that each breeder should have a micro chip number and every pup they sell should be chipped with it. For good breeders this shouldnt be a problem, they dont have anything to hide, in fact one would hope that they would be proud enough of their litters to do so. The ammount of pure breeds coming into rescue is scary and someone needs to take responsibility for it. Give dog wardens more powers and everyone by law to have their dog chipped, so each dog would have 2 chips, breeder and owner. There is only so much money in rescues and some of these 'ex' owners should be made to help bear the cost!
Sorry for rambling but its soul destroying watching how rescues are struggling and dogs are suffering because of it.

Whats the point of havng 2 chips? I thought each chip had a unique number and you can put the breeders details down in any event on the records?

The 2 chips would be so that the dogs history can be traced. It would also stop breeders churning out litter after litter ie. puppy farmers. People are ultimatley responsible for how many dogs there are. Also some breeders would actually like to know if one of their dogs came into rescue and would want to be involved in trying to rehome it. There are breeders that put into their contracts if you can no longer keep your dog that it goes back to them. I know there is one person on this page now that has just done that and I salute you because you are taking responsibility. We need tighter reins on the whole breeding thing. And no I am not anti breeding, thank goodness for the good breeders or I wouldn't have my dogs but just because dogs are K.C. registered doesnt mean that they are from a good breeder.

I was told there's no point in more than one chip, because they would 'disable' each other by confusing the scanner - leaving the dog effectively unidentifiable.

Surely the bad breeders just wouldn't chip? People would still buy the puppies.

But if we gave more powers to people such as dog wardens etc it would become a finable offence not to do so, and it needs to be a large fine to!

Am I just being thick? If bad breeders don't chip the puppies how will the wardens trace them? And surely wardens cant find every litter bred before they are sold. The RSPCA should be cracking down on puppy farmers - but they dont! This latest case proves that things have to be completely out of hand before anything is done. Also dog wardens are the responsibility of the local council, and to be frank, some councils bring in way too many crazy ideas to control things properly and effectively, and the regs. would vary from area to area.

Many responsible breeders who worry about their pups going into rescue witho7ut their knowledge either Microchip or Tattoo their litters so that they can be traced as the breeder.
I prefer the visible tattoo, as I think it more of a deterant to theft than chipping.
If any of mine ever come into rescue then their breeding and my deatails can be asceretained. I would of course always hope that the owner would contact me if they needed to rehome their dog.
This worries me a bit. Morse was chipped when we got him and his original owner signed him over to Seafield. We now are registered as his owners but know nothing about where he was bred - what can his breeder do at this stage if s/he had exclusions to say he should return to his breeder, and does this mean the vet and Seafield know who bred him but I dont?
