After having a house warming party a few months ago, my 2 year old German Shepherd Dog has become very scarred and fearful of all people, other than myself and my husband, upto the point that he has nearly bitten them. He was in my few all evening so know that nothing specific happened to have frightened him. Before the party he appeared to be a well balanced dog who enjoyed the company of anybody.

I have invited a behaviourist into my home who told me that I had to change the perseption of people from a frightening presence to one that he enjoyed. I did this by having a different friend visit us every evening, when they visited, and only when they visited, I was to feed Kaiser treat food eg. cheese, ham, biscuits any food that he really enjoyed. I had to make the visit as stress free and as fun as possible. Having done this for about 6-8 weeks I saw a big improvement in his behaviour, however it was extremely difficult and tiring to keep the flow of friends so as time has gone on the flow has dimininshed and gradually Kaisers behaviour has got worse, as the behaviourist had predicted would happen with fear related issues.

Although this method had brilliant results, I fear that it is an unrealistic method to keep up and wonder if anybody might have any other suggestions. I love my dog to death and hate to see him with so much anxiety.

I don't know how you feel about homeopathic remedies etc. but there are a few that might be worth a try. Firstly why not ask your vet about a DAP infuser, it is a pheromone based diffuser that is supposed to calm nervous or frightened dogs, I haven't tried one but I have heard they are very good. Also Bach flower remedies, rescue remedy, I used this for my springer when she became scared by fireworks at dog training club, she wouldn't go back into the hall but I gave her rescue remedy and it really helped. I am sure others will have opinions and I wish you all the best.

Also try Vitamin B, it has worked on a no. of Spanish who have the wary nature to them with people. It's well worth the try.
