can anyone help. my 3mth old lab is having a bit of trouble. he has and is still sufferring from mild dihorea. stools are like mr whippy icream in texture. also, he looked like he had conjunctivitis. the vet prescribed fucithalmic eye drops. since applying his eyes have gone blue. has anyone experienced this before and has it got better. the vet has since told me to stop administering them, but is unsure what to do next

Sorry to hear about your poorly lab, sadly I can't help you. However John is the best man to advise you, Labs are his breed, and he knows a great deal about dogs too. Hopefully he'll be along soon with some suggestions for you.

How long ago did your pup have his last vaccination?

A few years ago I had a 13 week old pup with blue eye. After examination by the animal Health Trust it was attributed to vaccine reaction.

The other possibility is that he has a viral hepatitis infection which in itself can cause blue eye.

Fucithalmic Acid Eye Drops are a regular treatment for bacterial conjunctivitis in both dogs and humans. I have had it used in my own eyes without any side effects. This is about all I can tell you. I really can't see a tie up between the eye drops and loose stools or for that matter blue eyes. Different companies use differing solutions to dilute the acid so I suppose the blue could be temporary staining but if that was the case I would have thought the vet would have known and told you.

There are a number of eye conditions which can give the eye a bluish appearance so you really do need to follow it up. What exactly is your vet doing now? If it is staining then I would think that now the drops have been stopped it should clear in short order.

You don’t give any indication of what country you are in (I looked for colour/color but you never used either!) the reason I ask is because, thinking about Lady Dazzle’s reply, the vaccine regime is different in the US to the UK. If in the UK then it is on the cards that your puppy could be suffering a mild reaction to it and this could well be the reason for the loose stools anyway.

Please keep in touch about this, if your vet cannot sort it then I can possibly point you to an eye specialist in your area.

Regards, John
