I am interested in buying an Akita, and was really wondering how much would a puppy usually cost - especially one with a good breed history e'g healthy etc. I have a good home in South Yorkshire to offer one, with no children. Thanks for your help. Hazel

Hello Hazel , welcome to the Forum :)

General info can be seen here Champdogs Breeders under Japanese Akita

Your best bet would be to get in touch with a few breeders and talk to them , maybe write to the breed club and get information about price and health checks etc. You could also go along to a local Champ Show and see some Akita breeders :)

hi,the average price for a well bred healthy akita is usually between £500-£650.

Akita's are lovely dogs but do require alot of training and a strong arm! as they can pull like the devil

I paid £650 for my bitch last year she had a good pedigree but that was to have her as a pet i.e. no breeding or showing without breeders blessings - if I wanted those restrictions lifted then it would have cost me an additional £200.

Look around at all the breeders you can - some are better than others and do not buy from someone who hasn't been in the business for a while.

Ask all the normal questions - get to see parents etc and be prepared to wait for the right one. When we were buying one we came across quite a few people who had just breed their bitch because they thought it may make them some money

If you want anymore information on what it is like to own one then drop me an e:mail (details in profile) and we can discuss it off line

It took us over 18 months to find the right Akita pup for us and the wait has been worth every single penny. Please please do not rush into buying the first Akita you find, it is really important to find the correct breeder.

We where very tempted to buy an Akita as soon as possible especially when we see the first pups. After some careful investigation it was found that this breeder had been telling a fair few lies to sell their pups and was only interested in making money.

It is very important that the history is known, proved and available to you, as there could be problems with health, temperament and socialisation skills. I would look at the top kennels such as Melodor and Redwitch and ask them for advice. Our Bitch Kira came from Melodor and I personally can't praise them enough for the wonderful dog we have now :-) They have also been very helpfull since we bought her. She is better behaved and more obedient than most of the dogs in our puppy class and all these are twice her age (she is 14 weeks old)

You will be looking at anywhere between £600-£900 for a quality Akita.

Are you looking for a dog or a bitch and is it to be for show or as a pet?

Akitas are, as you all say, loverly dogs, but.. you have to be careful,i believe that the police are likely to shoot on-site if it appears even slightly threating as they are known for the strange temperament! However, i have worked in a kennels with one for at least 6months and its been one of the nicest dogs ive ever met :)

Luckily not in the UK as the police here don't have guns!

I think as with all dogs early socialization is a must (really go out of your way to introduce the dog to as many new experiences as possible especially other dogs).

So are Akitas included in the Dangerous Dog Act??? Or have I slipped into the Twilight Zone (again); Talk about shooting them on sight has me a tad confused

I know the feeling, Liberty! No, Akitas aren't listed under the DDA, and no breed of dog may be "shot on sight". I've no idea where anyone could possibly get that idea!

Phew! Thanks for that JG, I was just about to reach for the Gin bottle ;)

I'm on my way .......... ;) :D

Where did you get this idea from? I take it you do not live in the UK.

If you class akitas as having a strange temperament then you would need to include GSDs, Dobes, Rotties, and just about every dog bigger than a poodle!
