I volenteer at an animal shelter and I love seeing dogs get adopted out. Recently there is a cute black and white terrier mix at the shelter. When ever anyone comes near his kennel he goes into the corner very afraid. I tried to get him to come near me by offering him a treat, but he doesn't respond. He must have been abused and I wanna help, but I don't know what to do. Any suggestions? I don't wanna to force him to come to me.

you could try hand feeding him with no eye contact & you sat/knelt on the floor put a small amount of food on your palm & put your hand outstretched to him

If you do get him nearer enough to touch t touch massage will help him relax try this link

Don't force the issue. Try sitting in a corner of his kennel/run with some treats, and occasionally put one on the floor, without even looking at the dog. Completely ignore him. Let him make the moves towards you. And don't react if he's brave enough to take one of the treats and rush away with it. Just put another one down, and then leave the kennel, all without taking any notice of the dog at all It sounds as if he needs longterm rehab, poor thing.

Hi, When I first encountered my little terrier (Lucy) she was exactly the same as the terrier you are talking about. The trick is talking. Take a book out the next time you visit him just sit down and start to read to him, and read for a hour or so at a time. A bowl of canned dog food also helps. :) But let him come to you and don't make eye contact. Also don't make any sudden movements. And most of all don't get discouraged, with love he will come out of his shell. Good luck
