I am wondering if anyone can offer advice on a boston terrier with very long nails. This bitch is six years old and is road walked twice daily, however, recently her nails have been growing very quickly and although I trim them regularly the vein in the nail is as long as the nail itself. She was at the vet last week for her booster, but he was no help as he just stated the obvious, that if they were trimmed or filed the vein would be cut and bleed. My concern is that if the vein and nail continue to grow at the same rate, she is going to be quite lame in the near future. Any help would be appreciated.

Dobermanns have their nails kept ultra short. This is done by trinmming a little off them very regularly. This will make the vein shrink back. so start taking a tiny bit off the nail twice a week, and the quick will shrink back.
I agree with Brainless, keep taking a bit off twice a week and the quick will shrink back. I trim the ends off of my GSD's nails every week to keep them short and the quick from growing. The new puppy (Bichon) has had her nails done twice already in just over a week that I've had her. A few of her nails are white and I can see the quick receding already :)

Vets can be hopelessly wimpish with nail trimming....and they charge the earth too. I took my whippet along once as I couldn't cut his nails and ws worrying about them getting too long. The vet said they were the right length (they were far too long), but had a go at cutting them...she was very nervous about it. My local petshop owner kindly does them now, but I have read if you take a tiny bit off each week the quick will go back. Do you have some of that nail powder to dab on his claw in case you do accidental nip the quick. It will stop the bleeding. Good luck.

Filing (or dremelling, which is quicker!) is good for this because there is no danger of going too far. Filing is also easier if the nails are wet - they're a bit softer then.

What do you use to file them? I know it's probably a daft question but I have never had a problem with long nails with my Lab, but now as I have a Dobe it would be handy to know for future reference- No problems in that area yet but I was thinking whilst reading the posts it's perhaps something I should do (ie just go through the motions) to get the dog used to it should the problem occur in the future.

Thank You all so much for your replies. This isn't one of my dogs, and I only see her about once a week, but I will start trimming them back as you suggested, each time I do see her and hopefully this will do the trick.
