Topic Dog Boards / General / My sentiments of the whole issue of AB`s
- By HELEN2003 [gb] Date 29.09.03 21:56 UTC
Hi

This is just a post to let you all know my sentiments on this matter.

The Kc and the Police cause mass hysteria concerning anything that seems to resemble a *fighting dog*

And i will tell you where i think the problem lies - it is people deciding to jump on the bandwagon , and deciding to breed these dogs , but they are not putting AB`s with AB`s , they are crossbreeding them to see if they can produce the *ultimate* fighting dog , so they think they can get the *im hard look* , or extention of their manhoods (which ever that may be) , which really is pathetic.

It was brought to my attention that there is a breeder in Manchester ( he decided to jump on the bandwagon , calling them AB`s or Olde Tyme Bulldogs on paper , or anything else he can to get away with what he is doing) , but the dogs he breeds are infact crossbred AB to Neo Mastiffs and any other *bull* breeds he has , so the pups he sells are not what they seem to be , they are Bandogs !!! , but sold on as something entirely different !!!!

Its people like him that the police should be talking to - for producing something that is not what it seems to be ( i helped rehome a dog he bred just over a week ago , which some of you knew about ) , i have nothing against Bandogs , but what he is doing is wrong , he should sell them as Bandogs , if he thought he could get away with it ! but he couldnt ! and would not ! , but people like him have caused all this , with the problem we are now faced with , with the Police , the Kc , and the DDA.

Yet , think about it , there have been no known cases in this country of the AB attacking , mauling , or hurting anyone , yet people are discriminated against for owning them , or , owning anything that resembles a Pit Bull.

Mokis ( my AB ) , mother really did look frightening , she was not a vicious or nasty dog , she just did not like strangers ( which is the AB`s common downfall ) , but i can relate to that , as many other breeds of dog posess that very trait.

I agree *some* breeds of dog can be nasty , that also includes Kc Reg ones , but i entirely blame the owners , and *some* breeders out there.

I have a British Bulldog , that should never have been bred , let alone even born.

An unkind thing to say - yes , but i know what he is like , and i know all the other people that brought a puppy from the same litter that he was from , and all the dogs have turned out exactly the same as each other , nasty. Infact a couple of them are really nasty !

Now what i wish to point out is , that all the people that brought a puppy from this litter , we cant all be bad owners.

I blame the breeder ( i will mention no names ) but she knows who she is , and she knows my feelings towards her.

I blame ALL the people who decided to jump on this bandwagon - without doing the research they really needed to , before they decided to start breeding their dogs !

I dont think anything is going to happen as regards to the AB and the DDA , theres no solid evidence to support why this breed should be put on there , or even mentioned on it.

Helen
being a Staffordshire owner I can understand your frustrations totally :(
The whole DD fiasco comes down to bad breeding and bad owners anyway

Hi Lel

I feel totaly frustrated :(

I knew about this meeting early last week , all week long i have been reasured by *reputable* AB breeders , and owners , that nothing will come of this meeting.

But it dont stop you thinking the worst :(

I was raised around Staffs all my life , they are fabulous dogs :)

I can't comment on the breeding but I can on irresponsible owners, a man lives opposite me who has five dogs, four are staffies one is a larger bull breed (the one with the strange shaped head) not a 100% sure what type that one is, but when my Dobe was approx 8 months old he had these five dogs in the field opposite my house running free ,no leads, my 17 yr old daughter was about to take mine out (on leads) these dogs flew through the hedge set on my two dogs, (the dobe and my old lab whos eleven, all hell broke loose. The dobe got off in the fray and pegged it away down the street, luckily no damage was done to any of the dogs. But now as far as my Dobe is concerned he has his own private vendetta going, he just has to see these dogs at a distance to set him off. And the idiot still hasn't learned - he still runs them all off the lead together. Then people wonder why the dogs get such bad press.
She P.S Hasn't stopped me signing the petition- it's not the majority of the dog's faults.

That counts for any breed whereby irresponsible owners leave their dogs off lead and not caring about the damage or the hurt they do.
An uncontrolled dog can do ALOT of damage especialy a bull breed. :(
I think bad breeding does count because as Helen rightly mentions about crosses - no thought for temperament and just the breeders trying to breed "the bigger the better".
Its them that should be under control :(

Please do not turn this into a 'lets knock the Police' thread. You seem to forget that they do not make the laws - they only enforce them ;-)

Hi

I was not having a go at the Police in particualar but they certainly dont help with the rubbish they sometimes weave.

I hate to say it , but i think they should have better thing to do than try and enforce something like this , its been proved that even if AB`s were added to the DDA , it wouldnt stop people owning them.

Look at how many people in the uk still own Pit Bulls.

hi helen, i can totally sympathise with your position, i have an ISBT (the other dog that some moron decided was the next pitt bull like fighting dog) and am really concerned that they will be the next dog under the hammer for this rediculous act!

Cant say i know a lot about AB's (or many other dogs for that matter) so wouldnt even attempt to judge their agression etc.

Would say though that, like with pretty much every breed of dog agression is either down to poor breeding or poor control and up bringing and shouldnt result in any dog being pretty effectivley wiped out in this country.

ps signed your petition, hope it goes well for you!

Hi Helen

The goverment are not going to add anymore dogs to the dda as the law does not work. The RSPCA (as far as I am led to beleive by Mr Butcher) has no agenda for pushing to add any other breeds to the dda. The police dont have a veiw either way as they only enforce the law whether the moral of it is right or wrong. I think the danger to certain breeds lies in europe. This will include an awful lot of KC dogs also. We should resist europes dog laws.
It does get frustrating being treated like a criminal because of your dog choice. I was treated like a leper by the majority of the dog owning public for 11 years because I had a pit bull. The only reason I didnt get another is that I didnt want to run the risk of it being taken from me as I had the only APBT in my small town so Iwas known by everyone for owning her. If they changed the law tomorrow I would definately have another along with my two ISBTs and I wouldnt worry about them fighting as with proper management its not a problem.

keep yer chin up lass were better than them that are too ignorant to learn.

regards Mick

Wheres the petition to sign?.
