I know this topic has been covered before in previous topics, but i am really confused.
We have a 4 year old cocker (Ollie) bought from battesea a month ago.
One day my father was playing his fave opera Cd and on one certain track, Ollie started to sing along to it. He wasnt howling but properly singing in tune!!!
He sounded really sad and afterwards went in his basket?

I know that sometimes dogs hear certain sounds which we cant, that can make them whine or howl, but this is really weird.
We kept playing the Cd and it is only that 1 track he groans along to.
It was really cute, but im wondering if maybe that track could remind him of his last family...thats why he sounds and looks so sad.

Does anyone think this could be true or do u think it is just something he can hear in the song which starts him off?

There's probably a tone in the track which sets him off - Cockers are very good at this - when I was a kid our's used to start up when we kids played the mouth organ.........

Its not only cockers, as a kid I played the trumpet and as soon as I started practising my Bichon would start to yap then howl and one of my afghans would join in with the "singing" - heaven knows what the neighbours thought, they were so loud I could hardly hear myself playing !!. It wasnt just the trumpet either, one of our previous Afghans used to "sing" along to bag pipe music, and im sure the mouth organ set them off at one point too. It must be the tone of the instrument because they never bothered with the recorder or keyboard !!!

I wouldnt worry about it bringing back memories for him, dogs usually do sound sad when they howl, I think the reason mine did it was because they didnt like the sound because they used to escape the room after a while !!

If I don't answer the telephone before the fourth ring, all my dogs howl in harmony to call me! :rolleyes:

ok so maybe he just doesnt like that perticular track...think i will now save it for christmas as his little party trick :-)

Our young dog taught all our others to do this - none of them "sang" before he came but he would lead them all off with a 4 part harmony when he heard my partner's scooter come up the road! Sadly he died young and we lost our old lad recently too so we no longer have the tenors - but the girls are still keeping up the tradition as far as two sopranos can! :)

George our BassettxDalmation often comes to me for a song. He barks at me with his head at a cute angle until I 'howl' with him. Then his head goes back and off he goes. He has a very good voice!!! Then Lola our Dobe(5 months) tries to join in. Well, in my experience, Dobes have awful voices and Lola sounds like a strangled chicken :(
