Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Butchers Tripe for Puppy?
- By ClaireM [gb] Date 29.09.03 12:17 UTC
Hi Everyone

Is it safe to give Molly a spoonful of above with her Burns? She's now 20 weeks and at the mo has Naturediet puppy with handful of Burns puppy mini bites. But have needed to mix handful of small pieces cooked sausage to get her to start eating again. Have been advised to change to Adult Naturdiet at 6mths so she's not far off that and I'm only thinking of adding the tripe for taste so only small amount.

Claire,

Be careful about adding things for taste that you do not make her fussy.

It will be fine if it is complete to add it but just be careful not to upset the applecart. We are guilty of spoiling them and then they become fussy and we wonder why... :-)

Hi Pam

Can't remember if you read my post last week about her not eating all day? She stopped eating completley for two days and I was at my wits end. Stopped any treats n case she was filling up on them but she still wouldn't eat. Then on Thursday night just as I'm saying 'if she doesn't eat any dinner I'm taking her to the vets in the morning' she ate the lot! (d'ya think she heard me???!!!) I had mixed in a very small handful of cooked sausage.

She then ate well all Friday and Saturday and started being picky again yesterday. Do you think she just gets bored and thinks 'oh, gone off that now, lets see what else she gives me?'. I know I'm guilty of fussing over her and have made a rod for my own back, but as she's my first dog I get worried when she doesn't eat.

Claire,

We have all been there with them... little sods eh !! :-)

They are creatures of habit and do not need the fodo changing at all, except if for some reason it is not agreeing with them.

The will not starve themselves.

It is hard not to treat them like children sometimes and spoil them, this is fine as long as you are prepared to do it all the time..

I personally would stick to one food and not budge from it..

I was laughing at my mum just the other day at the supermarket she was standing for ages ( I have been up and down 2 or 3 isles) picking flavours of kitty cat for her cat.... HELLO.. she would not be told.. :-)

Do you think I should stop the sausage as well then? What if she stops eating again?

Everyone I have spoken to says 'what's she eating' and when I say Naturediet they go 'oh' as that's meant to be one of the best foods you can get. Can't win!

Between the natures Choice and the Burns you really cannot go wrong.

If you have been giving a lot of sausage then she know she is getting it..

Has she always been on Burns? Refresh my memory :-) I am reading from your first post you are giving her Natures with a handful of Burns , are you thinking of putting the butchers on top of both of them??

It is very common to hear people say that their pup has went of their food ( but they were giving treats) then to try another food and I think the cycle begins. If that makes sense.

Claire in my honest opinion stick to one or if you must one at one feed and one at the other.. I know it is hard to stick to but it will make your life easy in the long run. The fac tyou say she wolved it down suggests she is fine.

Bare in mind she may eat less or appear fussy if she is teething also.. sometimes that can be confusing..

Pam

Edited to add, there is no harm in putting a little Butchers onto of the Burns if they enjoy it ( some do it ) but if I was, that would be the only food giving not another choice at a 2nd feed..

Think you may need to be firm.. she did it after all earlier

Would have put the butchers on the burns! Wasn't planning on feeding all three! LOL.

Think I will forget the tripe. Thanks for your help.

LOL claire, Sorry When I reread your first post I was think WOW LOL I am coming for my dinner at your house..

Fingers crossed she settles down..

It is like having a child sometimes.

It is best if you could get away without adding anything as the burns is a complete feed that has a balance that is require. have you tried putting it in the microwave for a few seconds to get the oils and the smell to the surface

Hi Christine,
Butchers Tripe is a tinned (meat) dog food - available in supermarkets or pet shops. I've heard it's one of the better ones, as a lot of them have a high water content - correct me if I'm wrong on that!

Think her teeth might be playing up again as have noticed few drops of blood on her teddy bear. Ate no dinner last night but most of brekkie this morning. I spooned what was left into an old bone as she seems to show a lot more interest when she has to dig it out! Terrier thing I guess.

Claire,

That is common in teething, I was grooming one of my puppies at the weekend and I gave him a tripe stick to chew 2 teeth fell out as he was on the table.. 5 1/2 months.
