Topic Dog Boards / Health / Safe to Spay after Torsion

My 8 year old bitch had a torsion almost 12 months ago, when her pups were 4 weeks old, she has had peculiar seasons ever since, dry season when pups were 4 months, then normal season in July, now she is showing signs of coming in season again. I think she needs to be spayed, but I am worried because she has had a torsion, and the stomach wall sewn. Has anyone had a bitch spayed after a torsion, what are your views?

There should be no problem the stomach is in the chest above the diaphragm and the womb in the area below the diaphragm.

Sorry, Jackie, but I thought the stomach was below the diaphragm? Only the heart and lungs were above? Could be wrong. Will check.

Not in people it isn't - I've checked!

Edit: And it isn't in dogs either, according to "Veterinary Notes for Dog Owners"

No I am sorry the stomach is below the diaphragm which is a strong muscle seperating the thoracic cavity from the abdominal cavity and is used in breathing the only organs in the thoracic cavity are the lungs and the heart.
Edited to say look at the link again Jacki I think you have misunderstood

Yes you are correct the liver and stomach are south of the diaphragm in the dog but still within the chest area and should make no difference to haveing the bitch spayed. Sorry to keep you up all night, got my animals mixed up.
