I have managed to track down a litter of Weimaraners who arent going to be docked - hurrah I thought !! I found them on the net and emailed a couple of questions to the breeder. The guy owns both the dog and bitch and is only breeding a one off litter because they want another dog, they dont show or work their dogs but both the dog and bitch have good pedigrees. As far as im concerned this is great because I dont want to show and I really want a home bred (rather than kennel bred) pup and it also obvious that this isnt a puppy farm. My one problem is that neither of the sire or dam have been hip scored, the persons reply to my query was this :: "Neither of the dogs have been scored, we consulted the vet before hand and he said that research has shown that hip dysplasia does not appear to be so much hereditary as once thought, but is more to do with nutrition and exercise during early years. Both dogs were given a clean bill of health by the vet who said that any problems in that area would have shown up by now." I can see some reasoning in this but as im not very knowledgeable about this topic I was wondering what others thought.

Well my fit & active 10 3/4 year old border collie has bad hd & if he had been x rayed I world never have known & bred from him.

One off breeders because they want another dog ? -but they are bringing possible 10 + into he world to get that one dog. If I want another dog I buy one in as I do not wish to breed & produce extra dogs

Don't show, don't work & don't health check. Interesting that the vet had told the breeder about not needing to x ray etc re hips. Iwouldn't touch the puppies with a barge pole but that is JMHO

Hiya, my 1 yr old ESS has HD and it is so sad :-(
We wanted a 'home bred' puppy and as HD is not apparently so common in ESS we didnt mind that the parents hadnt been hip scored. Never again! I hate to see Oscar in pain and discomfort. He is alot better now but we have to be careful about his exercise.
If I were you I think I'd look elsewhere.

I suggest you steer clear & find a responsible breeder of weimaraners who either shows, works or both and is breeding for the RIGHT reasons, getting the relevant health tests and knows what they are doing. I fail to see why you would go to someone who clearly doesnt know anything and prefer them because they are "home bred" (whatever that is supposed to mean ).

Well I can only say for me the dogs health would come first.

Maybe they are trying to save the expense of docking along with the cost of hip scoring! Dont show, dont work, dont use health schemes, I would steer clear. Just because you dont want to show doesnt mean that you cannot purchase your pup fom a good breeder. There are plenty of knowledgable Weimie people who show/work , use health schemes AND rear litters in the home, you just need to find one that doesnt dock also. When when you say "they have a good pedigree" are you familiar with those lines?

Thanks for all your replies, in my heart I knew I wouldnt buy one of these pups because it would destroy me if he got HD, you have all confirmed to me though not to go there.

Sam, home bred was probably the wrong term to use, I meant reared in the home and bred for the love of the dogs and not for money. In other words not a puppy farm, or so called "licenced breeder" who breed about 20 different breeds (puppy farm in disguise me thinks !!).

I dont know about the pedigree, the guy just told me they had a good pedigree (probably because it has loads of champions in it!!), I would have looked into the breeding lines of the sire and dam before purchasing a pup - it would have been my next question for you guys !!!!!

To be honest I dont think it is these peoples intention to cut corners with the breeding of their dogs, they have probably been ill advised - they obviously have never heard of Champdogs !!!!!

It looks like I will have to continue my search for my un-docked Weim, I am disapointed but my dogs health is more important to me, and I would rather wait another year than buy a unhealthy dog.

Think you have made the right choice, the docking of a dog done at the correct time and by skilled people cause the dog no problem but to have been bred from unhealthy stock can and does.

If you only want a pet, couldnt you contact a breeder of your choice and ask them not to dock a pup(bitch or dog). That way you get what you want with all health checks.

Can I ask why you want an undocked weim??? most people who would hipscore either show or work the dogs and would dock the puppies.

I currently have a rescue weimaraner who is undocked and am having great difficulty finding a home for her (I work with rescue). She has split her tail and it just wont heal. She isnt a show dog or working dog just a pet from a litter of undocked dogs... and now the trouble she is having with her tail makes me even more for docking.

If anyone is interested in taking a weim undocked please do get in touch.

Hi Lynn,
have you tried dipping her tail in a solution of alum with a touch of TCP added? I've found that works wonders in healing split tails. One of my dalmatians, who as I'm sure you know are prone to the proble, did this regularly until I used this method of treatment.

Often those that 'just want to breed one litter' may not have had the experience or done their research. I hope I haven't offended anyone with that but I often come across people who 1st ask me if I want to breed from my dogs (I have a speyed cocker bitch and now her half brother who I'll also get neutered when the time comes) and then in the same breath say that they'll breed just one litter and when you ask all the right questions they don't have the answers (hip scores or other health checks, breed lines, or will you take back any unwanted pups—they often believe that because they are pedigree they won't be unwanted at any stage!). They often think they're right in doing what they're doing because how dare I question them on this. In my mind those sort of 'home breeders' are just as bad as puppy farms

Hi Jeangenie, Thanks for the reply. Can you tell me what Alum is? TCP I have heard of but not alum. I have heard of weims with split tails but not had the personal experience of one, so this is a learning curve. Thanks

Hi Lynn,
Alum is a mineral salt (technically a double sulphate of aluminium potassium  !) which is very astringent and makes a very good styptic. You should be able to get it at a pharmacy, unless the rules have changed since I last bought some (from Boots, many years ago!)
