Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Puppy missing our other dog

Hello

We have a 3year old Choc Lab and a 6mth old Black Lab. They get on really well, however, we realised that we have not felt the puppy on his own very much at all, something we did with the choc from an early age and he is very calm on his own.

If someone is left at home with the puppy he is OK if we take the other dog out but have just noticed if he is on his own he gets quite distressed. I know this is our fault, what is the best way to solve this, gradually make the seperation longer?

To be honest there is hardly anytime we really need to seperate them but I do worry if something happend to the other they simply would not be used to being on their own again.

Many Thanks

Hi Labhouse

We have a similar situation. Our 2 dogs (aged 7 & 2) are fine if we leave them together but the younger one really hates being on his own - he won't even eat his food if there isn't someone in the room with him !

However we have tried to slowly get him used to his own company. We have got to the stage where we can leave him for about 10 minutes in a separate room without him crying - (not very long I know but we suspected it might be a long job :) ) Who knows, by the time he's ten he might manage half an hour :D

Try and use food to distract or play a game. They soon forget !!

We had this problem with ours but they soon get over it !!
