I was wondering if anyone could help me with my greedy puppy Bassett Hound. She is 9 months old now and still whenever I take her for her walks, even after breakfast and dinner, she walks with her nose to the ground for the majority of the journey. As we live in quite an urban area (which gets quite filthy after a football match) she keeps searching for fried chicken bones and chips that can be hidden on the side of the pavement. If I don't spot them first she snaps it up in no time and I can't get her to let go and leave it as she knows it is food. This is becoming annoying as when I am walking her I have to keep my eyes to the ground at all times. I am also quite worried as I know cooked bones are bad for dogs. Would a muzzle be affective/ok? Any help would be appreciated
Hi, people in my area chuck out great chunks of bread that would concuss a seagull and it was a nightmare getting our picky pup not to eat it. Teach her to LEAVE or DROP IT at home with a toy when you play with her, get her to swap the one in her mouth for the one in your hand at first then move on to Leave. Once this is established you can move outside - does she like carrying things in her mouth? If so it could be a substitute. Good luck. :)

Thanks, the only problem is that she can leave things when I say to, only after a few times repeating but when it comes to food she will have finished it by the time I say leave the once. I will keep practising though and maybe we will get there. She is just so willfull!
Thanks again

Hi
I am afraid that a Basset Hound is very food orientated, I have had two B Hounds and at the moment have a 13month old male one.
There is no way you will be able to stop them from always looking out for food, especailly when out on a walk.
They are after all a hound and they love food even when it is a food that is no good for them L O L.
Mine is also an expert at surfing any of my kitchen tops, so I always have to move food right to the back so he can't reach anything.
You will be surprised when they stand on their hind legs just how far they can reach by streching their necks, they may have short stuby legs but that won't stop them.
So you will just have to be extra vigialiant when walking your Basset Hound, I expect that you have allready discovered just how very stubborn they can be, but that is the make up of a Basset, so I wish you good luck.
As you can tell I do love Bassets even with their greedy ways.
Carol and Dexter a naughty but much loved Basset.
Just passing on a suggestion from a dog trainer pal. Bring bits of beloved food on the walk and give her this or toss it where she can find it. MIght not work with a Basset hut the idea is dogs value what we do and especially what we refuse them, so they wolf down stray food before we shout leave. Giving the dog food is meant to encourage them to wait and see if anything better is on offer.

Thanks for your advice.
It's nice to hear from another Bassett Hound owner. Evan though she is so naughty sometimes I think it's great that they have such a personality. She also has got to that size where she can reach the kitchen tops. She twists her head and gets even further with her long tongue!
Thanks for your advice.
