I HAVE A 14 MONTH OLD COCKER SPANIEL BITCH WHO ALL IN ALL IS COMPLETELY ADORABLE. WHEN I WALK HER IN THE PARK OFF LEAD SHE IS GENERALLY VERY GOOD AND THOUGH SHE LOVES TO RUN, NEVER STRAYS TOO FAR AND WILL COME BACK.
HOWEVER, THE EXCITEMENT CAN BECOME TO MUCH AND SHE BECOMES SO ABSORBED IN THE OUTSIDE WORLD THAT SHE TOTALLY IGNORES MY CALL (SEVERE CASE OF SELECTIVE HEARING DEVELOPS!). THIS IS AT ITS WORST AROUND OTHER DOGS AS SHE IS VERY SOCIABLE BUT CAN GET TO THE POINT OF BEING ANNOYING TO THEM WHEN SHE DOESN'T KNOW WHEN ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!
HOW CAN I GET HER TO FOCUS ON ME WHEN THERE ARE DISTRACTIONS AND STRENGTHEN HER RECALL?
I'VE SEEN DOGS WHO WANDER ALONG AT THEIR OWNERS SIDE HANGING ON THEIR EVERY MOVE JUST WAITING TO BE GIVEN THE NEXT INSTRUCTION!

Most of those owners will have spent many hours over a period of months training - your best bet is to contact a local APDT trainer and investigate joining a class......

liver cake is great for training but you need to start recall in the house from room to room and person to person. Call your dogs name and as soon as she looks say come once she comes to you treat her fro it she will soon get the odea that when she comes she will get a treat. The other thing to do in the fiels id invest in a long lead or retractable lead she can then wonder about 10ft in front, call her name as soon as she looks say come when she comes treat her. The ohter thing to try if there are dogs around is take take a squeaky toy (but you should do this on the lead until you are confident she will come off of the lead) once she show attention in the other dogs and goes to run towrds them call her name she looks squeak the toy say come the treat her with the toy or a treat.
Hope this helps it works with my little madam (well big really) nearly 6 month GSD

Thanks for the efforts but problem is she is very good in the house and when she knows she is restrained on a lead but as soon as she knows she has a bit of freedom she makes the most of it and when I call her name she doesn't even turn her head!! (selective hearing!)

Which is why you need a trainer to help you build the relationship with your little girl - she doesn't have enough respect or bonding with you to pay attention when you call (and you should only ever call her name once - calling repeatedly teaches your dog that your dog can carry on doing what she's doing, that you'll keep on calling until she's ready)
