Hi there
I have an English Springer pup of nearly 5 months. My main concern with him is that he wont stop jumping up at us. My partner is expecting a baby so we really want to cut this out before the dog gets too big and the baby is born.
We have tried ignoring him / turning our backs to him etc and have also tried making him sit straight away before saying hello to him. We have also tried leaving him in his crate for 5 or 10 mins in the morning before letting him out. None of the above seem to be working as yet and with the winter weather coming it seems we are going to be doomed with wet and muddy feet marks on our clothes.
Does anyone have any other things we can try or do we just have to persevere with one of the above tactics ?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Regards

Keep persevering with one method - the turning the back normally works, but it takes time and consistency. It can also help if you give the dog something to do instead - something that means he can NOT jump up - like tell him to 'sit' if he understands that command.
Also make sure you make plenty of preparation before the baby arrives so your dog will find it easier to accept the newcomer - taking a cloth which smells of the baby home so the dog can smell it is a help, as is really working on the obedience side of training - so the dog will settle down when it's babies feeding time etc. Good luck, I don't think a young Springer and a new baby would be my idea of a peaceful life - but different strokes for different folks <G>

Most Springers jump, it's just a case of letting him know when it is welcome. For example when it's not welcome give him a stern NO.... when you invite it give him a doggy treat, also remember that all dogs pick up on key words...in this instance TREAT...so when you welcome it praise him and say "come on let's get a TREAT". He'll learn, we apply the same with pups learning to wee outside, they soon learn better to wee outside and get a treat than a stern NO.
Also get him in a routine, Springers respond well to set routines and remember lots of exercise and you should find like our girl that he will want to sleep or chew a bone.
Good Luck and bye the way 2Mucky Paws" are all Springers middle name.

I was lucky with my Springer - she didn't jump up. But my Munsters will, given the chance. I teach them to come up to 'say hello' on command. Now they wait until told. It doesn't take long to learn. Just pat your chest, say 'up' and open your arm to 'catch' your springer. They soon learn it's a new game which they get praised for and, with luck, won't jump up as much.
