Hi all i will be picking up my puppy boxer on sunday the 28th,i have just been informed by the breder that the bitch i was planning on having has beent to the vets for a check up and has a small hernia, the vet and the breeder have both said that it is fine and may go in time,is this true?
also i was planning on showing her and maybe breeding in the future would this still be possible?
many thanks

I would never buy a dog for showing and breeding with a hernia. Most hernias are hereditary.

Oh dear.... I personally wouldnt to be honest.....but it is your choice, I know it would be pretty hard to say no now though. Anyone else in the dogs parentage etc had them?
Also, is the breeder taking the bill?

Also, "It may go in time".....not strictly true..once the hernia is there, there will be a weakness forever, whether it is removed or not..but if it isnt...then the dog effectively has a hole inside it so any straining, jumping, picking up incorrectly, etc could potentially make it 10 times worse.

I am the breeder of the pup. No none of the parents have a hernia or the brothers and sisters in a litter of 11 or grandparents as far as I am aware, the vet delivered this pup as she was stuck and she came out sperated from her umbilical cord which the vet thinks may be a factor it is very small about the size of an old half penny piece and is palpable and the vet thinks it should close. I have offered the buyers a deposit refund and have been totally honest with them. I have spoken to a couple of Boxer breeders this morning one of whom has a champion bitch born with a small one which closed on it's own she has gone on to have 3 litters and has not passed this on to her babies or grand children. I probably think it best if I did refund the deposit as I have an experienced pet home waiting who are fine with the situation.

I would say DON'T DO IT.........I purchased a bitch early last year who had a hernia, breeder didn't tell me till the day she dropped the pup at my house, but she assured me it wasn't an inherited one - also assured me this is what her vet had said also and it would be ok.............well as it happened it wasn't ok, the hernia got bigger and my vet said it was definitely inherited (even if not traceable in the last few generations) and as the bitch was bought for breeding my vet recommended not using her and having her spayed ASAP! as a bitch with faults, no matter how small, should never be bred from.
