Hi
I have a 10 wk old Miniature Schnauzer pup. He was fine for the first few days we had him but since then (apx 11days) has had loose stools, sometimes watery & sometimes with blood. We took him to the vet when we found the blood & he diagnosed a swollen & damaged Colon lining, caused by the upset tummy. He gave him two injections, dexadreson & amoxycillin & said to give him 48hrs to improve. It's now been 3 days & still no sign of recovery. Has anyone come across this before? If not better by Friday I am planning another trip to the vet.
I put him on to chicken & rice for several days & live yoghurt but vet said to go back to Eukanuba again now as it's chicken based anyway. Pups not at all bothered by any of the above & is very lively still.
Any help, suggestions greatly appreciated.
Thx
Sue

Poor little thing. Have you spoken to the breeder at all? They might be offer some more help, and I'm sure they'd like to know you've got a problem with your young man.

Hi Fiona, was thinking about doing this next. Just wanted to see if he got any better first. Like I said he's so full of life & not bothered by it all it's strange his tummy seems so bad. I think he's enjoying being thoroughly spoilt too :-)

Sue, did he improve when he was being fed on the chicken and rice and yogurt?

No, he's been the same through out.
When we had this trouble a few years back we were advised to starve her for 24 hours then go to the chicken and rice diet. She needed the starvation period to clear out all the stuff in her system. The time we didn't do the starve period it didn't clear up as fast. If it's been going on for this long I'd be taking him back as he can't afford the dehydration. The reason for the rice is to ensure he is getting enough liquid and if he goes back on his regular diet he might not get enough. I'm very surprised at this advice, but then I'm not a vet, and I only know what you've put on the board. Perhaps the vet has another idea of what's going on.

I know the vet has seen the pup but could it be a heavy worm burden.
This happened to a bitch i bought a couple of years ago.

Not sure - he was wormed at 8 weeks & is due again at 12 weeks (beg of Feb) so I guess it's unlikely. Do you know if it's harmful to the pup to worm him again just in case?
Thx

I wouldn't do anything until you have spoken to your vet again Sue. Let us know how you get on :-)

It sounds like toxidiosis (spelling?) to me, I'm no vet, but sometimes when a pup goes to a new home he will get a nervous stomach and have bloody loose stool. Usually they act pretty normal. The only thing to cure it is a medicine called Albon. Mention this to your vet the next time you go in. Some breeds get this more than others, it is very treatable. Usually brought out by stressful situations. Check it out with your vet asap.

Quick Update... went back to vet on Sat & he gave us two lots of tablets & some special food for him.
He said to keep him on the Eukanuba (but cut down) & also the canned stuff he gave us & the live yoghurt & bottled or boiled water only. Well, it all seems to have worked & pups back to normal pooping - Hooray :-) Fingers crossed it stays this way when he finishes the tablets. I think the dog has more food than us in the cupboard now!!!!
Thanks to everyone for all the tips & suggestions.
