Hi
I have had my nine week old westie for a week now and have been paper training him. Sometimes he goes on the paper but more often than not he seems to prefer the carpet!! Should I abandon paper training and put him the garden? Is it ok for him to go in the garden as he has only had one set of vacinations? Also when I'm out at work I will be leaving him with my Dad but he lives in a flat so he wont have the benefit of a garden, whats the best thing to do?

Hi,
I always think paper training is a bit of a waste of time and very confusing for the puppy, because we train them to go on the paper and then we re-train them to go outside, so why not skip the bit in the middle and go for the outside first!! :)
I would start training outside, make sure you NEVER punish him for going inside, but if you catch him in the act, say no firmly, pick him up and say outside while putting him outside and praise him.
Use a special word and a little treat when he pees in the right place and give loads of praise, he will soon learn.
