I am trying to find a suitable male puppy german shepherd dog and i'm having a hard time trying to find one. I have contacted almost everyone on the champ dog breeder list, but nothing till next year....Anyway.
There is a dog available, but when i asked the breeder about hip scores and haemophilia, which are common problems in GSD's he said that he doesn't test the parents as he doesn't see why he should have to put dogs through it. Naturally i was very suspicious.
Why would a responsible breeder..not test the medical status of the parents?
Should i get a puppy off him?
Your help and advice would be very gratefully received.

Why????? well because it all costs money & it sounds like this uncaring breeder is only interested in making maximum £££££ & not the welfare of his puppies and his breed. Stay well away!
I quite agree with Sam. If the breeder can't be bothered to have his breeding stock checked I wouldn't go near him. You've obviously gone to some trouble checking out the problems in the breed and trying to find a reputable breeder so don't waste your time with this one. The right pup is waiting out there for you - somewhere.

Of course, there is one other reason who someone would not test. Because they know their stock is of very poor quality anyway! I would leave well alone!

Have to agree. It is purely down to not wanting to spen the money. If they are cutting corners on such important things as health, what else are they skimping on????
For my current litter, the Hip Scoring , Eye Testing and Premate blood tests, and checking the bitch had finished whelping out of hours has cost me £496. An uncaring breeder would have saved themselves the expense. The bitch would have had to pass any dead pups herself and deal with any infection caused, been mated to a convienient dog (so testing for correct breeding time not needed), and as the future welfare of the pups is irelevant once they are off the premises, and the money in his pocket, then why health test. If the pups is sick, he can always replace it with another if worst comes to worst.

Hi Graham
I too would avoid this breeder.A pup from unscored parents can end up costing you thousends of pounds and a lot of heart ache.
If you go to www.pedigreedogs.co.uk you will find several litters already born and more planned.
Good luck,Archer

Hi Graham
Try doing a search on google for a German Shepherd Club of GB, they usually hold puppy lists from respected breeders.
Hopefully someone in the breed will come along and point you in the right direction. But do stay away from breeders that can't be bothered or spend the money on hip scoring and relevant health checks.

Hi,
Definately keep away from this one, anyone who cannot be bothered to health test a breed who everyone knows has problems, is very likely to be in it for the money rather than anything else!!!!!
MAKES ME MAD!!!!!!!! :(

Hi Graham
Yep have to agree with everyone else, don't touch the pups with a barge pole, you could be lucky but why take the chance.
Have emailed you with several breeders who have pups and do hip score.
Hope you find your boy :)

Thank you all for taking the time to reply to my message. I have decided to stay well away from that breeder.
I will just have to be patient and find an honest and reputable breeder that checks parents for medical conditions such as those mentioned.
Surely its people such as him that keep those genetic defects in the gene pool, therefore causing the problems that they do.
Thanks once again

Your right Graham, more people should take your approach. Hold out for your GSD he has to be the one for you! Really get to know his breeder and make sure you are happy about everything, if not move on! My future pup is currently just a twinkle in her dad's eye ;) Providing pregnancy goes well she will come home next year - and I cant wait but I have met her sire and dam and they were both soooo gorgeous that I wouldn't want her from any others!!
