Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Runny Poo when Fed Raw Meaty Bones (locked)
- By Mushroom [gb] Date 23.09.03 14:14 UTC
Hi

I feed my 3 year old FCR the raw meaty bone diet, he is doing great on it and loves it to bits! However I wanted to feed my Boxer pup (10 weeks) on the same diet, we didn't have a good start as she came to us with slopy poo which continued for 2 weeks, I changed her to Natures Menu. She then had a night of sickness and diarrhoea, next day she was bright and happy (I did take her to the vet) and the poos had been firm since. Two days ago I started with the bones again only to find her doing runny poo again today. My older dog passes hard odourless poos with no problem. Has anyone else had this problem? I would be very grateful of any advise.

Thank you.

You don't mention what exactly you are feeding your puppy. Also you have not mentioned if and when vaccination has taken place which can affect the bowels.

In general you need to start off with a pup with a healthy gut and not necessarily jump to the conclusion that the diet itself is causing the problem. The next thing to think about is what species and type of RMBs you are feeding. In general it is best to start with one animal eg chicken wings and make sure the dog's bowels etc are comfortable with that before adding variety. It is NOT harmful to keep them on one item for a couple of weeks.

Another factor is the greater production of gastric juices produced to deal with the introduction of raw food.

I would recommend ensuring that your dog is not suffering from any adverse reactions from vaccine and is otherwise healthy, feeding either live yoghurt or probiotics daily to ensure healthy gut flora and replace any good bacteria removed from dire rear, feeding only chicken wings and perhaps adding a very small amoutn (tbsp) of Apple Cider Vinegar to the meals to help with bone breakdown.

Hi

Thanks for your reply. Pup was vaccinated at 8 weeks, the runny poo had been happening for a week prior to this and continued until a week after vaccination then stopped after a night of nasty illness, so she had solid poo a week after injection. For 4 days after the illness I fed her natures menu only and she continued to pass solid poo (hope that makes sense!!?)

On Sunday I started with natures menu in the morning and then bones the rest of the day today she started passing runny poos. She has had mostly chicken (legs with main bulk of meat removed) with a small amount of pork bones. I shall stick to chicken for a while. I also put pro biotics in the natures menu.

Cheers.

Hmm why are you taking the bulk of the meat off? It should stay on. Wings have a better meat to bone ration also a higher iron content. I would stay off pork at the moment.

HI

I don't take the meat off, the legs come in a huge load of meaty bones from the butcher she has had legs the last couple of days only-back too wings tomorrow!

Really good news is that a couple of solids have appeared I guessing I'm panicing after all the trouble we've had over the first two weeks.

Thank you very much for you help
best wishes.

i always thought pork bones were a no no for dogs because they cause diareha, my vet told me neither raw or cooked bones are good for them, anyway they absolutely stink when they,ve eaten a raw bone,
- By theemx [gb] Date 23.09.03 23:05 UTC
Funnily enough Shaunie, i feed all three of my dogs raw bones everyday, and they smell LESS than they used to when they were eating commercial complete diets.

I have also heard that "pork" can give dogs upset tums:( Stay away from it for a while and see how she goes.

My dogs reeeefuse to eat pork in any shape or form, not sure why tho?

Hi, my lot eat all kinds of meat & pork is one of them. Never had a problem with it & never had any smells, not even when they eat raw fish :)

i mean their fur smells where they've been chewing the bone !
- By Christine Date 24.09.03 19:40 UTC
Funny that Shaunnie, my lots fur never stinks when they chew bones :) ......maybe it`s the type of bones you`re giving your dog. There again, if your dog smell that much after eating bones a quick rub with a damp cloth would sort that problem out, where there`s a will there`s a way.........:)

,perhaps your sense of smell is'nt as good as mine, cos a bone is a bone and they are all covered in dead flesh so they all stink! or maybe you've just got use to the smell?
- By Christine Date 25.09.03 07:00 UTC
Actually I have no sense of smell, BUT all my friends & family do!!!! Everyone gets asked do this, that or the other smell & they would certainly tell me if my house or dogs smell, hubby being the first to let me know as he lives here & no, we haven`t got used to any iffy smells because there`re aint any in my house!

Just out of interest Shaunnie, and no offence intended, but are you vegetarian? I only ask this because it sounds as if you have a serious dislike of meat.

Why would pork bones cause diarrhoea any more than any other species? I feed pork regularly and my dogs do not suffer. In general MOST vets are not trained in dietetics, are unfamiliar with raw feeding and cannot give an informed opinion on what foods to feed most dogs. The vet IS correct in that COOKED bones are a no no for dogs because these ARE dangerous to dogs.

All my dogs are raw fed and odour free this includes their breath, their fur and they do not f**t! :)
- By SHAUNIE [gb] Date 24.09.03 22:44 UTC
i think vets have a good idea what can cause diarrehoea after all they treat hundreds of dogs with it!
- By theemx [gb] Date 24.09.03 22:54 UTC
My dogs dont stink at all......raw bones or not........occasionally, for an hour or so after eating a bowl of sardines they have fish breath, but bones dont make them stink.......

There are literally hundreds of things that will cause diarrhoea, excess sugar, excess fats, irritated bowel........ and sometimes giving a dog a food it is not used to will cause mild diarrhoea. That said, i can give my lot virtually anything these days, apart from cheap dog kibble, and they are all fine....pork bones included.

raw bones smell horrible you have obviously got use to the smell believe me a dog that has been gnawing on a raw bone ends up with a smelly face its not pleasent!
- By Rooney [gb] Date 25.09.03 06:36 UTC
Shaunie,

Everyone's idea of what is smelly or not can be different. Fresh, raw bones smell of.....fresh, raw bones! I agree, when they've been around for a little while, they smell. I throw mine away after Murph's had a good chew and no, he doesn't smell!
As to diarrhoea - Sonny was recommended Hill by the vet.....result - raging diarrhoea. So sometimes, even vets get it wrong.
What I'm trying to say is every dog is different. What suits one doesn't suit another and that's okay.

No I dont believe you at all, got too much experience to the contrary to do do that!!!!!!! And just because you can`t be bothered to wash your dogs face you deprive it of having a bone????

Christine, Spain.
- By Christine Date 25.09.03 07:05 UTC
Maybe that works in theory......in practice no, not all the time.

Unless cultures are taken it is usually impossible to positively identify the causes of diarrhoea of which there can be many. And one of the reasons that so many hundreds of dogs actually do suffer from diarrhoea is because they are fed inappropriate foods.

Raw meaty bones does not happen to be one of them.
- By ozzie72 [au] Date 25.09.03 13:09 UTC
I cant say i've ever noticed a smell after my dogs have eaten bones either, thats a strange one? i have 2 shih-tzu's in FULL coat, even with all that hair there is never a smell, they get raw, bloody bones a few times a week.

well each to their own i think raw bones smell funny ,bones can actually bring the worse out in a dog when they get pocessive over them, many a dog fight has broken out when owners with more than one dog gives them bones,christine-who says i don't give my dog a bone not me!if my dog ate a raw bone and it made her smell i'd say so why are you going off on one just cos i said raw bones smell,i'im not insulting you or your dog its just a fact! and i do not deprive my dog their is absolutely no reason why a dog should need to gnaw on a bone it has no benefits to them what so ever just wears their teeth away and makes them smell!!
- By Brainless [gb] Date 25.09.03 19:08 UTC
The main benefit of a recreational bone is enjoyment. Now some dogs will be satisfierd chewing toys, but mine have never been interested in any inedible chews, but will happily spend hours munching on a marrow bone. the second benefit is fresh breath, and lovely teeth that are still in good condition in my 11 1/2 year old that the vet always passes comment on their cleanliness.
- By tohme Date 26.09.03 05:04 UTC
Obviously a lot of dog owners make a lot of mistakes, the person who never made a mistake never made anything, that is how we learn. Those of us with multiple dog households get the experience to feed bones to our dogs separately so that the potential for dog fights is reduced/removed.

We are all entitled to our opinions; however opinions are not, necessarily, facts. It may be that you and your dogs find no benefits in gnawing on bones, however my dogs and I have found many benefits not least benefiting society by being environmentally friendly and using items that would otherwised be discarded.
- By Christine Date 26.09.03 06:56 UTC
Firstly Shaunnie saying that maybe I`d got used to the smell sounded to me you were saying my dogs/house did smell & I just didn`t notice it any longer, that couldn`t be further from the truth!!!
I`m very lucky, all my dog`s have their bones together & get along fine without fighting. They have them for the sheer pleasure it gives them of doing something that comes natural to them & at the same time cleaning their teeth & exercising the jaw shoulders neck & other different parts of their body. After a couple of hrs of bone chewing my lot sleep for hrs. They also derive a lot of goodness from the marrow they extract from them & that is all fact & the benefits dogs get from chewing bones.
Saying bones smell...well just about everything has a smell doesn`t it! Fresh meaty bones smell like fresh meaty bones & do not stink and nor do my dogs when they`ve finished with them.

well i never said that ! so read the posts properly and stop making accusations! sensitivity is deffernantly a problem with some people on this web site
- By Christine Date 26.09.03 20:35 UTC
You are so right with the middle of your post Shaunie!!!! I`m a sensitive soul...same as my dog`s are too :) (they do say owners are like their dog`s or is that the other way round???) But that`s not a problem to me or mine at all!

Don`t give a damn if it`s a problem to you or anybody else tho :)
