My name is Michael Barry . In the 40's my dad had a Gordon
that was black and white and it was a great dog. I am retiring
as a professor and am looking for such a dog. I know the dogs
from breeders are all black and tan but I believe this
has not been always the case. At any rate as a retiring professor
I am both an original and an aberation so should anyone know where
I can find such a dog please contact me. I am interested in hunting
grouse and woodcock only . I will be able to come to the UK since
I have a place in Ireland. I live in Florida but hunt in upstate NY.

Thanks and all the best
Michael Barry

Hi,
Just a thought, but perhaps your memory is of a black and white setter, but it would have been an English setter not a gordon setter, which have always been black and tan. I'd suggest you visit some setter breeders before getting a shooting dog, as not all dogs are bred for working these days. Some of the older type english setters can be big dogs.

The standard colour for Gordons is of course black & tan but other colours have cropped up in the past including all red, liver and tan and black white and tan. I seem to remember some controversy in the breed notes in the dog press not long ago about liver & tan Gordons being registered so genes for other colours do still exist in the breed.
