Hello friends, I am looking to own a westie puppy asap. I lost my beloved
'Levi' 2 years ago this May, I have a little boy whos two and a 13wk old
daughter and want to ask westie experts how soon should I take this new
bundle of joy on? I am a full time housewife so always at home.
Many Thanks
Cally xx

Cally - I think that most breeders prefer the children in the family to be over 5 years old before they would consider you for a westie.

Westie are great dogs though - I have one myself.

There are westie breeders who post on here so they may offer their advice.

If your little boys only two I would wait awhile as puppys can give nasty nips when playing! Also small children can in turn be ruff with small puppys!

Good choice in breed, I love westies!

I think you have enough on your hands just now looking after a 2 year old and a very young baby, a puppy takes up as much time as a baby, and as puppys "play bite" it could "nip" your toddler or baby, and remember puppies teeth are like razors and could pierce the skin, the pup would just be playing, but your toddler would say, puppy bite, mum!! I would wait at least another 5 years before considering bringing a puppy into the house, by that time, the children will be a lot older and in the meantime you would have had plenty of time to teach the children how to react with puppies, and by the time the children are at school you will not find it so stressfull bringing a puppy into the house and training it, please also remember young children no matter how good you think they will be with a puppy, will try and lift "the bundle of fur" up and squeeze it tightly and hurt it,and then the puppy will give a warning growl, but the child won't realise the puppy is warning them to leave it alone, and lastly remember its a terrier, and they are like lightning, especially puppies, they can just turn their heads and nip, and if the pup was in your sons arms, it would nip his face, and i'm sure that is not what you want. - Irene- Westyholm Westies.
