My 4 year old Cocker bitch has a now chronic left ear infection. The organism is Pseudamonas which is now resistant to everything the vet has tried.
There is an odourless gooey brownish black discharge.
At present we do not know the initial cause of it and until we clear up the thik discharge we will not be able to.
I am at the stage where I have been advised by my vet that I can either start a treatment of Gentimicin, to which the organism is sensitive, but which may cause deafness. My fear is that also if it is the last resort & is used indiscrimantly a resistance may be developed.
The other option is cleaning the ear out under general anaesthetic and investigating the cause, if possible. My fear is that the ear drum may be perforated inadvertently thus risking the spread of infection or, if it already is perforated, some damage may be caused.
Any advice or previous experience would be gratefully appreciared.
Also, for future reference, a reputable and harmless ear cleaner that can be recommended would be appreciated.

Have you ever tried "Thornit"? It's a powder as opposed to drops and is very good.
Good luck & I hope your dog finds some relief soon :)

Thornit is a wonderful powder, I have a cocker spaniel that suffers with his ears, I used this for one day only and noticed a great improvement..............give it a go, it definitely worked with my boy!

Im not sure, to be honest i cant remember exactly but i think this is the infection that can be passed onto humans so make sure you wash your hands as you can get a nasty ear infection also.
