Topic Dog Boards / General / Bitch vs Dog questions...
- By saffy [gb] Date 21.09.03 18:06 UTC
Hi all!
Getting a pup, yey!
I heard that a bitch will cost more than a dog, true? (if so, approx how much more)
also, what is the hardest to get hold of? if you know what i mean... will more people want a bitch or a dog?
Just curious- thanks!!!

If you are in the market for a bitch, every breeder you approach will have dogs. If you are after a dog, every breeder you contact will have bitches  :D

yes, i know. But we are on a puppy list, and i was wondering if a bitch will take longer to arrive ( i dont mind if they do, its just so i can have an understanding of if she will arrive early/late- you see, the K.C list says from 3-8 months waiting... it is a bit vague)

edited to say- no need to roll your eyes at me, Admin!

Sense of humour bypass? I am sure every breeder that walks this planet would like to be able to know in advance what sex their litters will be. It is a lottery!

Edited: IT WAS A JOKE! YOU KNOW FUNNY HA HA .. Jeez

Surely when a litter is born, the bitches and dogs arrive one after another? So how could a bitch take longer to arrive?
Cathy.

HI FORTIS.
i dont mean a bitch will take longer to arrive from one litter. I mean, well, erm... its hard to write what i mean...
but, will bitches be more sort after than dogs (coz i am on a waiting list, requested a bitch, if most people request bitches, then it will be a longer wait... see)

Not sure that bitches cost more to buy but do cost more to have neutured. Not sure about waiting longer for a bitch either. Surely it depends on whats born and what people on waiting list in front of you want. :-)

how much to have neutred???
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 21.09.03 19:03 UTC
Neutering costs vary from area to area, and according to the size of the animal. Expect to pay about £40 more to spay a bitch than to castrate a dog.

My friend has just had her collie bitch spayed, cost £80, but she did get £25 off with NCDL.

And if you have a litter with a lot of dogs, all your enquirers will want bitches. And vice versa.

A person I knew years ago had, at 14 weeks, 9 male dobermann puppies getting bigger and less 'cute' by the second ...
- By kazz Date 21.09.03 19:15 UTC
Ah Yes Admin, but if you don't mind either a dog or bitch every breeder you contact will only have KITTENS :D

I know I keep on about "Years ago" but the fact is, I'm old! So anyway, as I was saying, years ago bitches were cheaper than dogs! with dogs costing around £30 bitches were about £25! It's all change now and bitches in most breeds cost more than dogs. (And a little more than £25!!!)

But Saffy, It is down to what YOU want. I've had both in my time but now only have bitches! I'm glad to say other people prefer dogs otherwise the canine race would end!!

Forget the price difference, decide what you want and go for it even if it means waiting. You will have around 15 years to regret being hasty.

Regards, John

Hello Saffy,

The dog world is your oyster so to speak, you can have the choice of either a dog or a bitch, and are already on a puppy waiting list, then wait until the pups are born and decide which PUP you like and don't bother about the sex.

I know in my breed you pay the same price for a dog or bitch, but in others, yes bitches do cost more.

Unfortunately due to the old wives tale of bitches being easier than males more people ask for bitches, that's why more often than not there's a longer waiting list!!
- By tohme Date 21.09.03 22:03 UTC
A lot of bitches are priced dearer than males because you can breed from them. IMHO and experience a good breeder will not charge any different.
- By Fillis Date 22.09.03 17:11 UTC
I believe Saffy is waiting for a SCWT and she shouldn't be charged more because of the sex, nor should she be charged extra for "show quality" - if you are Saffy, please don't buy from that breeder.
