my little bichon Toby who is only 8 has developed catteracts in both eyes. Can anyone tell me if there is a opthalmic eye clinic so I can have them removed. I live in Blackburn Lancashire. I am willing to drive. I have been searching for 5 months with no luck. Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks Kathy

Hi Kathy, I have an eye testing session on the 7th of next month with Prof. Peter Bedford. He will know for certain whats available up with you so, as they say, "Watch this space"

Best wishes, John

PS. Please remind me a little nearer the time as I have a holiday before then!!

Hello sorry to read about Toby's eyes. I was a veterinary nurse and we used to use the opthalmic specialists at Willows Veterinary Centre, Tanworth Lane, Solihull, West Midlands. Sorry I don't have the phone number to hand but they are excellent vets and I would certainly recommend them. Good luck

Have seen a video of cateracts being removed from the eye of a dog, but as in humans it depends on what the cause and type is.

Hi Kathy, Stuart Ellis in Preston is on the BSAVA eye panel & is an opthalmologist. Dont have his number to hand but it is in Yellow Pages. Never had any surgery performed by him (we use John Errington in the North East) so cant give a personal recomendation but he is in your area.
bye

Dear John
I can't believe how helpful every one has been. I stumbled on this sight by accident after months of searching for a vet that deals with eyes and now i have the address of 2. many thanks to everyone for their help. I will let you all know how toby get on.
it has become very sad when he runs ino things then sits down and cries.
many thanks Kathy

We just try to help Kathy. I know what it's like to live with a blind dog. If the worst comes to the worst, it's amazing how they can adapt. I used to run my old girl off lead in the fields. I always put myself in a position where she walked up to me. It meant running around so that i could put myself in the right position but it kept her confidence. Furniture was never moved around in doors and she got used to a series of touches on her sides as direction signals.

Best wishes, John

Hi again Kathy. I had a word with Prof. Bedford tonight about Toby’s cataracts. In his opinion you could do no better than to go and see Stuart Ellis in Preston. He has performed this operation many times and I’m told is a very clever and very nice person.

Best wishes, John

Hi Yes I have only met Mr Ellis when he has been eye testing my collies but I do agree he is a very nice man who makes you feel your dog is special even though he must see hundreds of dogs for eye tests :)Gillian
