Hi guys, 3 weeks back i bought a bulldog puppy to join my other bulldog, frenchie and staff. Ive called her Paris, anyway shes just had her jabs so she can now go out and my friend who is a dog trainer has told me that once a month i should fast my dogs for 36 hours. Ive never done this with my other dogs and i want to know what is the point of fasting them, stupidly i forgot to ask my friend that? My vet has told me its rubbish and pointless to fast your dog. Im really confused, what do you guys fink.

What absolute rubbish this person has told you , fasting dogs i belive went out with the dark ages !

And if she is a puppy i would not recommend doing it.

But i would not do it with any dog.

A lot of people still recommend this; IMHO there is no point in it and, depending upon what you're feeding, could cause a dangerous dip in blood sugar etc levels for that period of time unless you are giving electrolytes etc.

Congratulations on your new puppy - you must be delighted. This idea of fasting a dog for 24 hours (never heard of it being increased to 36, though) was first put about very many years ago, on the belief that 'in the wild' dogs wouldn't eat every day, so being hungry occasionally was natural and therefore good for them. Others believe that, given the choice dogs 'in the wild' would eat every day, and that enforced fasting is therefore unnatural.
I have never fasted any of my dogs, and they generally (barring accidents) live well into their teens. Do what you feel most comfortable doing.
