Hi
We have a 12 week old male Cocker Spaniel Puppy. He is fantastic and has fitted in really well with family life. He is paper and crate trained and a fantastic little boy. Only issue is, he likes to chew on my hands and chases my sons heels/trousers incessantly. I have tried shouting, tugging his collar at the sides etc but he doesnt seem to want to know. If he is biting my hand and I say no he will stop but he *loves* to chase my sons legs.....any ideas on how to stop this???? (He is also trying to mate with his leg also!!)
I have tried:
Scolding
Tapping his nose
Excluding him (i.e putting him in another room)
Offering him another chew toy
but he still goes back to chasing Keir whenever he moves.
Any ideas!!?????

Try a plastic container and some gravel / stones, when he chases Keir again shake the container, but try not to let him see it, he should stop as they don't like the sudden noise, he will learn to associate biting trousers = horrible noise = don't do it! The puppy loving will stoop for a while soon too, but it does come back with a vengeance, so be warned....!!!
He'll grow out of it too, my Blue Roan Cocker boy is now 7 months old and whilst he still loves to lick my feet........ he doesn't chase my feet around anymore. ;)

Your puppy is treating your son as another littermate. When he grabs Keir's trousers, Keir must stand still immediately. The more anyone reacts to this, the more exciting the game becomes. So you must make it boring. All fun stops. Yes, it can take a long time to cross a room this way, but it is the surest and quickest way of curing the problem.

Hi
We have a blue roan cocker spaniel, and he his 5 months old now, we are having the same problem.
Murphy always wants to bite me more than my partner, we have tried putting him in another room and also giving him a toy to play with. it works for a few seconds and then he dives back to bite me.
the ouch noise dosent work at all, and just makes him want to bite more. We have even have a dog trainer that comes and see's him, but she hasnt managed to stop him yet.
When the dog trainer comes murphy is always on his best behaviour and its like he knows who and why she is here, and makes us look completely daft when we tell her what he has been doing.
Its quite weird really because when he was about 3 months he started the biting and with the help from the trainer we managed to stop him, and now at 5 months he has started it all over again.
It does get you down after a while, because murphy his such a cute dog and we have no other complaints bar this one.
He also seems to think that i am a female dog and like my arms and legs if you know what i mean, i have looked at all the information on here to get him to stop biting but none of them seem to work on him, my only concearn is that he can get quite nasty when he is biting and some of his bites really hurt for days.
so your not the only one out there with a puppy that likes to bite, if i figure out how to stop him i will let you know, and also if you do please advise.
from a sore and bitten cocker spaniel owner - boo hoo

Hi Amanda
Thanks for the update. Seems we have a similar problem. I have tried all the suggestions but he is just not interested in anything apart from gnawing on my hand and chasing my sons ankles. I cant even pat his head now cos he immediately tries to chew my hand. I have noticed it is worse when he is overexicted. I am going to speak to the breeder to see if his siblings have had the same problems and will let you know how I get on. Incidently, when the Snoop is out and people are making a fuss of him he never tries to gnaw on them.......hmmmm
I am reallly disappointed as he is a gorgeous wee boy and apart from this and a bit of an issue with toilet training he has been fantastic.
We start obedience training on Monday so I will let you know how I get on.
Thanks again for the update..

Yea i have a blue roan cocker too ohh my, her puppy months its just like having another baby running around and at 18/19 months old shes still quite lively ;) to put it mild.
Yup she did the same to my legs a sharp no. should stop it dont shout it , say it loudly with a low pitch.
and just keep on trying, hopefuly it will get threw to the little critter. they just want to play at that age and when they go on there play" mode thats it , but you have to show pup in some way you dont want to play!puppys like high pitch sounds so make sure your firm and low.
:D well i think your in for some fun;) good luck.
Ps if anyone trys to tell you to bite pup back it just wont work, ive seen other posters on this boad telling people to bite back:P my pup was at the vets and dident butt a eyelid when she was used as a pin cushion;) beilve me a bit wont make a blind bit of difference! they will think your a litter mate:D
