Topic Dog Boards / General / Good vets?

Having just been charged £40 for a booster jab and £20 for 6 drontal plus tablets at medi-vet, along with being told that I HAVE to come in and get cassie spayed (was going to anyway, but I would rather the vet gave advice and let me make up my own mind!!) We've decided to find a better vet, preferably one that isnt so commercialized as medi-vet and also I would prefer if they actually had the animals interests at heart and not their pay packets :(
Medi-vets waiting room is full of Hills food, leaflets, charts etc.
Im in London, and any suggestions of a good vet will be very much appreciated, preferably N/NW London.
Unfortunately none of my friends own dogs so I cant get any feedback from them.

£40?! I only paid £26! If someone suggests another vet...DEFINATELY GO THERE! Try asking in a pet shop or asking someone in pet welfare if they can point you in the right direction.

Ring round your local dog owning friends and local boarding kennels, rescue centres and ask which vets they use. People who keep numbers of dogs need the vet more often - especially rescue centres and may be able recommend and good and reasonably priced practise.

where i live we have a practice called vet savers that only do first jabs, boosters and cat/dog speys castrations, because they dont have the overheads of the other vets the charges are much lower, i know they are
quite widely distributed around the north east where we live, does anyone know if they are anywhere else?

example my friend is having her cat speyed, local vet was going to charge 50 pounds vet savers charged 25 pounds,

and its only 24 pounds for puppy jabs and 15 pounds for the booster every year

I came across a website for a vets just up the road from us, they also have an 'in house' animal behaviourist, which I think will come in handy for our two (we are having problems with cassie snapping :( )
Think Ill give them a try, hopefully they wont be too expensive either :)

OUr vet is not the cheapest in the world due to his local market but we like him because he is direct, the dog loves him and he gives you the information and lets you make a decision yourself. They also weighed Morse for me for free and charged very little for his last lot of worming stuff. And he has a tribe of dogs he talks about to you which I feel helps inspire confidence. MInd you people either love him or hate him so word of mouth has its limits. At least with a pet its easier to actually choose and move practice unlike the health service.

Good vets are like gold-dust! Happy dogs and a good relationship with my vet are far more important things than cost. I know our vets aren't the cheapest in the area - but they're not the most expensive either. However the fact that my dogs DRAG me into the vets office, that I am happy to be seen by any of the three vets in the practice, and feel I can talk to them about anything and they will talk 'to' me and not 'at' me means so much more than the money issue.

When you find a great vet - hang on to them no matter what!

Here in Surrey my vet charged £156 for a spay, which includes the anaesthesia, antibiotic jab, pain jab, follow-up with nurse at 3 days to check the stitches and stich removal at ten days.

I can't say I am overly impressed with my vet. He tends to hire a lot of locums and anytime I have dealt with him I've found him a bit pompous. The only thing I do really like is that they are quick to say when something is beyond their capabilities and fortunately my area has a good network of specialists for referrals.
