I feed my dogs Autarky which they love the question I have is, 2 of them need to loose weight, does anyone know if it would be ok to feed them Autarky Autumn which is more of a light version for older dogs over 7 years of age, mine are only 2 though and would this work as a lighter diet.

Never mind I will ask in the pet shop where I buy the food.

Does it say on the bag that it can be used for putting dogs on a low fat diet ?? Just a thought? I sort of remember that the JWB senior mentions that ? I maybe wrong ?

Why not try and get in touch with the manufacturer as they would be the best people to talk to rather than the pet shop.

Just feed less.

Just feed less of what you are feeding now.

Just how low can I go if I feed less though, for a dog her weight and size she should be on 165g per day as a resting dog, how much should i reduce this to if its for weight management.

You have to throw away the notion of what the average dog eats according to the packet :-)

There are three weights in the equation

1....how much do you feed her and she puts on weight

2....how much do you feed her and she maintains her weight

3....how much do you feed her and she looses weight.

The amounts will be individual to HER :-)

However, be completely honest about what else your dog is fed in a day..........does she have ANY treats whatsoever? These must also be taken into account. Rawhide chews, chewsticks, bones, pig ears, toast, etc etc all jhave a calorific value that will affect her weight!

When our collie put too much weight on a couple of years ago, we didn't change her food, just gave her less. So where she used to have one cup in morning and one cup at night, she would get half to 3/4 cups (dried food) - it did take a couple of months, but she got back to the weight she was supposed to be. And she didn't have any biscuits etc during the day in between! The amount of food stated a dog should have is only a guideline - all dogs are different, so you work out your own 'right amounts'.

Hi
I feed Autarky and find the quantities on the packet way too much.My 2 elkhounds are both very energetic but they have no where near the amount stated on the packet and I still have to watch their weight.Try bulking up the feed with rice and veg.
Do you feed any treats?? Even the smallest of treats can cause a dog to not loose weight so if you are feeding the odd treat I would stop and it should help with weight loss.

Hard to accept I know but if the amount you are feeding is causing your dog to be over weight you are feeding too much. Even if you have to go to a spoonfull to hold the dog at the correct weight then that is the amount to give. Have not fed a food yet that does not have far too much printed on the packaging.

EDIT: only wish it was so easy to get my weight down.
