hardly a cheery subject, but having spent the morning with the bank arranging the purchase of our new house i need some advise! they suggested making a will which got me to thinking, in the event i die i want to ensure my dogs will still be cared for. has anyone made a provision in their will that will provide money to ensure the care and/or rehoming of their dogs? can you name a person who inheriates the dogs? what if i wanted to leave something to a charity? has anyone any experience of this?
many thanks,
kelly

Haven't done it yet, but is in the works. All of this can be specified quite easily. We have already lined up who gets the dogs, and then it's a matter of how much money goes with each dog for care.

hi
My husband deals with this sort of thing daily, as he works for firm of solicitors.
As Wendy said, it's very easy to do ; just make sure that the person who you are entrusting the dogs to is in complete agreement, and that you trust them totally.
There have been cases where people have inherited an animal, plus a substantial amount to cover the upkeep.....then have disposed of the animal...and taken the dosh!!!
I ought to do something similar about my houseful, but I would certainly want some clause put in, perhaps that the executor of the will requires a yearly vet report stating that the animal is still healthy, happy and well looked after.
If you are using a family member, then it should be easier, as not only will they already know the animal well, they are less likely to not keep their part of the bargain.
For anyone who has no one to leave their pet to, I believe The Cinnamon Trust will register you and your pets, and a lot of people make a covenant in their will to provide for petsleft to a charity.

Edited to say, ...of course, all these things must be done as part of the will, and a DIY one may cause problems if it's not completed correctly, so best to use solicitor.

Hi Kelly, as someone already said it must be someone you trust absolutely! You can leave the entrusted named person/s(if they are agreeable) an annuity of a specified amount for the upkeep & welfare of the dog.
You would normally leave the annuity to a trustee of your will, if you leave the annuity to a person other than your trustee, then the person in charge of the dog, should present your trustee with a life & health/welfare cerificate issued by a reputable vet before the trustee pays the annuity to the person concerned.
Thats from my feller & he`s a lawyer :)

ps he said his fees [$ disbursments can be sent to.......]) :D
