I have two Westies, both Bitches aged ten. One of the bitches is not very socialable with other dogs depending on mood, and as turned on my other bitch causing distree for us all. I have two very young children and eventhough she as never turned on them I am very concerned. This is upsetting, however I need to know would the the Westie rescue or someone, consider her due to history. Help much appreciatted

Rehoming your bitch at 10 years old is not only cruel in my opinion, but almost impossible for any rescue organisation to do. Homes are hard enough to find for older dogs let alone 10 year olds! May I be so bold as to suggest that you either buy her a muzzle for when she goes out, and/or stop taking her to places where there are other dogs. Would it not be possible for you to separate her from the other bitch and keep an eye on her around your children? Your bitch has given you 10 years of her life. The least you could do is allow her to spend what is left of her numbered days in a home that she knows. If you really must part with her, then I suggest that you have her put to sleep. That in my opinion, would be far kinder to her than passing the problem on to someone else to deal with.

Before you jump to any conclusions, have you had your dog checked by the vet?
For her to change behaviour towards your other dog is uncommon if they have always been close.
It could be something very simple like decreased vision which means that she is easily startled, decreased hearing could also cause problems, and we must also consider that she may have problem which is causing her some pain, pain can cause a dramatic change and lead to a short temper.
As a volunteer at a rescue centre we see elderly dogs come in all of the time, usually they never find a home and are eventually put to sleep, do not let her go unless you are handing her to a new home personally, you would rather say good-bye to her now than allow her to spend some time in a kennel and then be put to sleep because she is unrehomable, especially if you declare her problems.
