Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Assessing dogs for armed forces?
- By guest [gb] Date 18.09.03 10:12 UTC
Does anyone have any knowledge of contacts for the various armed forces or similar, that are interested to assess certain breeds for security work in their field.

I know of a gsd male (15-18 months old) that has been rehomed from 'Rescue', but unfortunately has got a very positive drive for aggression. In a general home environment he is a potential 'time bomb'. I would therefore like to suggest to the people concerned to perhaps make contact with the Police or other Forces to see if they feel they could channel and control his aggressiveness appropriately and thereby give this dog the opportunity of a fulfulling life.

Any links for contacts would be helpful,
Thank you.

Potential 'time bombs' are now no longer selected for police and other services. This came about due to the withdrawal of training aids such as the electric collar and prong collar. These dogs now unfortunately usually end up euthanised. Dogs with steady temperaments are selected.
However, as the military dogs live in kennels and are not required to be taken home by their handlers you could contact the Defence Animal Centre based in Melton Mowbray and ask them if they are interested.

The Royal Airforce may well be interested. They will take these kind of dogs in
and put them through their own selection training.Seen it done many times
when I was living at RAF Kinloss and Lossiemouth.
Ring up either of these bases and ask to be put in touch with the dog section
they will point you in the right direction. They have a cracking agility dog team
as well:-)
All the dogs are handled with much care and attention no aggressive training methods
used here ;-)

Have to disagree with you Lara, i know someone who had a gsd with fear aggression, no-one could go near him, he now works for police, only last year too

My reply is now the official stance Jacki - yes there are exceptions to the rule if an experienced handler is willing to put him/herself out and there is a shortage of dogs at the time but they are few and far between now.

The mans name is Roy Pearson and he takes the dog to his premises to train it for armed forces, policeing and the fire brigaide, I was given his number by a police dog trainer, apparently he is very good hope this helps
