How long would you perservere with showing a pup if the puppy wanst getting constantly placed in the show ring ?Would you stop and wait for it to grow up a bit and then see or would you just carry on anyway? I dont now what to do for the best

No one has a dog consistently placed unless it is a real high flyer. Keep going you and pup will learn. If it is any comfort the dogs that do really well as pups do not always last into adulthood. Personaly I love showing in the puppy and junior classes, just enjoy, who cares about winning when you can have a good day out.

It depends to a certain extent on the size of the classes. Not being placed in a class of 15 or 20 is no shame. Always coming last in small classes, against different competition, is another matter. Very few dogs are placed every time. That is one of the thrills of showing!

It might be an idea to ask your puppy's breeder whether or not they think she is of a suitable standard to be shown. They have a vested interest in the dog and will probably give you an honest opinion.

i love going to the shows. its a great day out and you can admire the other dogs. reef always gets a big hug and kiss no matter what placing he gets. and of course i;m always smug when i get told *your dog should have won * lol. i have seen people marching out of the venue with faces like thunder which i think is silly.....and people who take it for granted that their dog is going to win..nice seing the smile wiped from their faces as well lol. its like the old saying *there are more champions sat beside the fire at home than in the ring*.

Hi,

Some dogs are pulled from showing and put back into the ring at 12-18 months
and then go on to be placed at most shows and gaining cc's.
Sometimes alot to do with maturity, but not always
My bitch Amber was getting placed nearly everytime ch and open shows then
she hit a wall as we left junior to enter graduate and post grad and now come
bouncing back with in the cards everytime.Selecting the judge carefully also
plays a part and I only show her in full coat.
With Amber she was slow maturing but well worth it,I think shes in her prime now
she is 5yrs some look past it after 3yrs don't see these dogs again.
Unfortunately alot of puppies look super mature at 6-7 months they don't look
like puppies or sometimes act like them, which is a real shame:-(.
In minor puppy I like to see a dog still look a baby ,not something that look
as though it can hold its own in a junior class, and still act a puppy not a perfect caboard cut out
that looks bored.

Just my opinion :-)

It is hard when you are a novice to the showing world though I agree .
Do you take timeout to see how the pup matures or is that giving up too easily and what do professional show people do .
If pup doesnt get placed a lot do they wait and see .
You can go through periods when you dont seem to win anything or even be placed and you do get down hearted and wonder if your dog is good enough . Then you can have a good placing and it all starts over again !! :)
How old is pup and what breed ??

Tell you what, it's hard when you are an old hand and you don't get placed :)

Hi
as I said before when I brought my first Elkhound to show he was unplaced or last in every show we did throughout puppy and junior classes.First time in Post grad he won in a class of 5 (good size class for males in our breed) and has never been out of the first 3 since in 12 months including 2nd at crufts.
I suppose thiough it depends on why your showing-I do it for the love of being at the shows and meeting other elkie people .If I was doing it for the win I would probably have taken him out of the ring for 12 months and waited for him to mature
