I've just noticed a small scab like thing on my dogs head. There looked to be a bit of blood around it so I've wiped it and put some antiseptic ointment on it. It might be that he has bumped into something - he's always banging his head on something. What does a tick look like when it is embedded? Can you see that it's a parasite immediately?

Ticks swell as they feed on blood, so i would think that if it was feeding on your dogs head it should have been big enough to see. They dont bury their whole body into the dog just their head/mouthparts. Perhaps one has had a feed and dropped off? Maybe he did just bang his head? I would keep an eye on it just in case a possible tick head is still in the skin.
