Is it normal for puppys to keep getting Diarehea?? My lot seem to get it every few days. I was originally feeding nutro, but changed as advised by the vets after the first time, i now feed James weel beloved, with a little nature diet meat. Tafter the vets advice i give boiled chicken and rice, then wean back in normal food but they seem to get this every few days. is this really normal as suggested?? Any ideas??

Hi, If thye have done well on it (cured the squits?) I would put them back on chicken and rice with a blob of live yoghurt on top for at least 7 days. During this time if they were mine I would be thinking of putting them back on a food that is well known for sensitive tums and well recommended maybe the chicken and rice version if there is one in the brand you choose? If it then continues to happen its back to the vet I guess. I am sassuming they are liveley and well but just a bit runny? How old are they?

You do not give the age of the pups or if they have been wormed recently or even at all.

They are 8 weeks old have been wormed again finished saturday. 4 pups went to their new homes on sunday and i have spoken to 2 of the new owners and their pups have become more solid, could it just be that because 1 is squity they all are?? living in such close quarters!!!

Hi Brinny
We are battling with exactly the same problem and we too have changed on to James wellbeloved we seem to have one solid one day the the opposite the next it is worrying although the pups are eating well and all look very healthy a short course of antibiotics from the vet helped while they lasted then back to the runs I am starting to think it may be because they are living in close quarters too, any advice anyone has would be welcome.

Hi Debbie
How old are your pups?
it is worrying, but like you say mine also are all fit and healthy eating well etc, and they were all checked by the vets on Saturday as they are starting to go to their new homes and he didnt think it waqs that unusal, he said basically they are just babies and as with human babies they get diarehea a lot, it is just really hard to try and find a solution. I am now feeding boiled chicken and rice which does seem to work at firming them up., aLTHOUGH THEY ARE NOW REALLY BRIGHT YELLOW WHICH I HAVE NOT SEEN BEFORE!!?????

Bright yellow doesn't sound right.?!

Hi Brinny
Mine are 6 weeks old today, this morning the ones with the runs are different to yesterday morning it's really bugging me now about what to do for the best, my vet takes a don't worry stance too but I have visions of sending them to their new owners with a case of loo rolls in their puppy packs, LOL. Might try the chicken and rice though, I have tried the live yogurt with no effect. It is a little embarassing when you bring a puppy out to view and they are so runny.

Hi Debbie
Boiled chicken and rice definitly works, i have tried this a couple of times over the last few weeks and within a dayor 2 they are back to normal, and with the normal food weened back in they do stay like that for while. I hope no one is having curry for breakfast but my lots looks like chicken korma at the moment!!!!!! I do think that this close quarters has a theory though, because a lady i work with who had one of my pups collected him on Sunday, and they were all squirty then but he has been fine now on his own.

Debbie,
Last year there was a diarrhea bug running around, perhaps it is still here.
The breeder of my pup said the entire litter came down with it, brought back from a show by one of her adults. The litter pups were all lively and healthy looking. She brought them back several days later -- and this time they cooperated and produced runny evidence for the vet. They were all given antiobiotics and it cleared up as a result.
After I brought her home at 10 weeks my own pup had loose stools frequently, but not diarhea. It was only when she broke her leg at 5 months and went on a course of antiobiotics that the problem was completely resolved.
