Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / "honeycomb" tripe
- By ozzie72 [au] Date 13.09.03 14:23 UTC
As some of you may remember i posted asking about the nutrition of white tripe as we cant get hold of green tripe here in Australia, well i finally found a butcher who sells the honeycomb tripe,it seems this is the closest i will ever get to green tripe:(
The main reason i want to feed tripe is i want to bulk up my girls, will the honeycomb do this, does it have any nutrition left in it?
I have searched the archives but it does not have the answers to my questions.

i would appreciate your input:)

thanks
christine

Sounds a bit like lights (lung) to me, but I'm not an expert on tripe. ask the butcher what it is.

Hi Jackie
i'm aware what tripe is i just want to know if honeycomb will do the jobs in question.

Many years ago I used to work in the butchery section of a small supermarket, and we sold washed tripe - I would have described it as having a honeycomb texture, but it was still bleached or washed, so didn't contain the goodness 'proper' green tripe has :(

You miss understand me I meant ask the butcher which part of the intestine it was. The only thing I have seen that was honeycomb was lights and I thought that may be in Australia it was call tripe as it is a similar type of meat.

sorry but if your butcher sells it it is not the best tripe to give to dogs and it will be more money so i would not give it to them, you can use minced lamb and veg i also use this as well as the tripe/minced chicken and veg that will still do what you want bulk them up. all raw hope that helps you.

If you look at the quetion 'what is tripe' posted at the end of August you will see my post dated 29.8.03 giving info on the honeycomb tripe.

Hi Rugrott,
i am getting all of this conflicting advice, some people say honeycomb is just as bad as the bleached stuff, then others are saying it's o.k,which is it???? surely it's better than the white stuff but i know it's not as good as the green but as i've said i cant get hold of the green tripe, honeycomb cannot be totally useless, can it????My dogs love it:) and always finish their dinner when there is tripe mixed in with it,they are picky eaters i'm just so happy when they lick their bowls clean.
So which is it people:) will honeycomb bulk them up and does it have any nutritional value to it?? my butcher is of absolutely no help to me,he cant answer any of my questions.

thanks guys

Christine

Hi if your dogs like it and you cant get the better tripe then use it see if it starts to body your dogs up the main thing is your dogs are eating it.

Any tripe including honeycomb tripe are all part of a ruminants stomach the honeycomb is not as hairy as the other parts of the tripe and is more tender.
Any tripe which is on sale in a butchers shop is for human consumption and is therefore washed and bleached i.e. white tripe as opposed to green tripe which is unwashed unbleached and contains all the smelly things such as :-

Moisture 71.37%
Crude Fat 11.70%
Protein 15.82%
Ash 1.23%
Phosphorous 0.14%
Calcium 0.12%
Calories 756.35 cal/lb.
pH 6.12
Lactic Acid Bacteria 12,000 CFU/G
Linoleic Acid (EFA) 2.72%
Linolenic Acid (EFA) 0.37%

all beneificial to dogs.
If you can find the analysis for bleached tripe you will know the difference in nutritional value between them.

As I have said in my previous post the honeycomb tripe is the part of the stomach which is nearest the rear end and when looking at a whole tripe it actually looks like a honeycomb. I think this part of the tripe is generally used for the human food chain and thus would be of no beneficial value to your dog. It needs to be untreated ie. brown, tan, black, grey etc. Having been involved in raw meats for many years I have not actually come across any tripe with 'hairs' on it! I generally feed my dogs on all parts of the tripe (a large piece cut approx 1-2lb in weight) but do prefer to feed them the honeycomb part since it seems more bulky and it takes them longer to rip and chew on it. Any part of the tripe (beef tripe that it) will bulk your dog up providing it is feed with a good wholesome biscuit and a balanced diet. Lamb tripe (I always feel) is a 'filler' - fills the dog up but doesn't fatten it up. Any part of the beef tripe will body your dog up - what breed is your dog and how old. My young dogs are on 3lb of meat a day plus a natural mixer as well as other stuff veg, yoguart, herbs, supplements etc. Everyone has different opinions on what is best for the dog as regards tripe and I can only go on my own experiences (20years plus). I came across a good website recently on raw/natural feeding (http://www.irishwolfhounds.org) the nutrition page is very good and worth a read. Although written for that breed by a very experienced person can be adapted for any breed. I am sure Hilary would be more than happy to deal with any queries you have and her email address is on that site.

Hi Rugrott,
I have 2 shih-tzu's aged 3yrs.(emma) and 8mths.(bonnie) It is emma i am worried about, she had a very bad start to life she was abused and extremely malnourished when she came to live with us a little over a year ago,she weighed 4.2 kilo, she is now 5.7k. i think she has a compromised immune system?as her hair is dry and grows very, very slowly she seems to take longer to heal,e.g desexing and if she gets a cut it takes ages to heal,i have taken her to 2 vets,1 a holistic and they both gave her a clean bill of health, except that she is a little lean for a shihtzu, bonnie is already 6.3kilo. I guess it will take a lot more time to get emma in a healthy state,i have just started supplementing her food with "prozyme"and EPO, my vet tells me i should see a dramatic difference soon,i'm hoping i will as it cost $75.00 for 750ml. for the prozyme:0
Rugrott your post re:honeycomb is a little confusing, you say it has not much nutritional value but it will bulk her up,is this correct?
Anyway they really love it so it's not doing any harm either way.

Thanks for taking the time to help me out,i really appreciate it:)

The honeycomb tripe used for the human food chain has no beneficial value since it is bleached and all the nutriants taken out - sorry if I confused you.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 17.09.03 07:26 UTC
I still can't understand how meat sold for human consumption can have no nutritional or beneficial value.

You didnt mention calories...you said nutritional value ;)
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 17.09.03 07:48 UTC
But calories are nutritional value (unless they are pure sugars - sucrose, dextrose etc) - and the tripe still has protein - bleaching cannot remove that.

I like MaccyD's ...one of my secret vices is a Big Mac ;) But grief ..they are so unnecessary ....useless calories !

Yes,Yes,Yes i need the xtra calories/fat put on Emma, this is the only reason i want to feed tripe, they get PLENTY/ENOUGH nutrition from their other foods, tripe is just an added xtra to speed along the weight gain.

christine:)
- By rugrott [gb] Date 17.09.03 19:12 UTC
Sorry again, I mean't no nutrional value to the dog since it is bleached. Any part of the beef tripe will put weight on so keep stuffing it down the dogs throat until you get the desired result!!

I prefer KFC don't like burgers - I wont go into what actually goes into them!!!
Mind you I've gone off chicken as well after recent things reported on the telly.

If we listen to everything the government tell us we would live on bread and water and be thin as a rake! Mind you they would probably tell us that bread and water is bad for us as well.
- By Taffo [gb] Date 17.09.03 19:36 UTC
Sorry I should of used the word villi not hairy as it would of been easier for people who no nothing about tripe to understand.
