Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / dog from greece - advice please

Hello everyone,
I have just returned from a holiday on the greek island of kos (never again). Whilst there I met the most pitiful, abused pup of around 4months. This dog was homeless and chained up outside a restaurant. Each night thugs (I am sorry to say some were British) were walking by and using this poor thing as a punch bag.
I couldn't leave him and so took him back to my apartment.
I arranged (through our rep) and took him to a vet where he had a rabies shot, first injection and was micro-chipped. The vet arranged for a lady called Pascalle Ruperti to pick him up and keep him at the kennels she apparently had in the mountains. I paid for all his innoculations and gave the lady €300 for the dog's first monthly board.
I have been on various web-sites (defra, greek animal rescue etc.etc.) but to date I have had no reply to the e-mails I have sent.
I am well versed on the Pets Travel Scheme now, but I was wondering if any one could advise me about transport home to the UK and also if I should try to have him boarded out in another country while I am waiting for him to qualify for entry into this country. The holiday rep in Kos said that Pascalle Ruperti was the only person on Kos she would trust her own dog with. But having not been able to visit the kennels and only meeting the lady for around 5 minutes, I am just not sure. I would hate to think that I've taken this poor dog out of the frying pan and straight into the fire.
I would be so grateful for any information that anyone can give me.
Thank you

Sorry, can't be of any help, just wanted to say well done for helping the poor little soul, I hope you have some luck bringing him home. I am sure that wherever he is now, is better than what he was enduring before, as long as he is dry and fed and not being hurt I'm sure he will think he is in heaven

All the very best

You could try to get him into a kennels in France near Calais. As long as he doesn't go through a country not under the scheme then I think you'll be OK.
Well done on trying to do something.

Your rep is correct Pascalle Ruperti is the only rescue and works really hard to help the dogs of Greece without any help from the Greek Gov. she relies on people for donations did she give you a phone number to keep in touch with her? if not get some one you know if they are going on there hols there to go and see her it is very basic so i have been told but they are fed and cared for can you not get out there again just for a few days to go and see the pup and talk to Pascalle.

Hi Guest

I work with a girl who lives in Kos, and commutes here to work (don't ask...it's a long and boring story) if it would help you, I could have a word with her, and see if she can help you at all?? Needlless to say, she speaks fluent Greek :)

It might be a good idea for you to register as a Champdog member?

Please keep posting about this pup, I would love to know the outcome. I hope you get it to the UK without any problems and when you do maybe you can post a photo of it so we can see what it looks like.
Good Luck.

Hi

I have brought 3 dogs into the UK from Greece. It is not easy and you must first start the ball rolling with getting the puppy started for entry to the UK with the 'Pets Passport Scheme'.

Please do not listen to anyone who tells you that is not needed anymore. Some people think that because we have abolished quarantine then dogs can come straight into the UK - that is not so.

Please email as there is just so much to post on here, and I will give you all of the help that I can and hopefully put you in contact with people who might be able to help you.

Be prepared for a long wait, things move slowly in these Countries. That is the 1st rule. Also be prepared for the cost of it all. The pets passport micro chipping blood tests etc are not that bad. But you then have flights etc. You should also read up on what diseases dogs from other Countries can carry ie zoonoses.

I hope that this helps.

Hi

Sorry I did not read the full message you posted. Getting past my bedtime.

Boarding out in another Country is very costly, I was quoted between £500 and £1000 pounds, this was for boarding in France.

It is not easy and so very frustrating trying to make it all come together when the dog is in Greece and you are here. I found the constant checking to see what was happening a nightmare. You just have to trust the people who have the dog. You do not have a lot of choice really. Even if you took the puppy and put him in another Country you would still be more or less working blind.

Brittania airways fly dogs from Greece to the UK. And Ladyhaye kennels easipet.com are their agents.

Ring and ask to speak to Amanda on 01342 832161 she might and I say might know of someone in the area your puppy is.

Try Contact Information:
Vangelis and Janne Trakossa, Ippocratous Street 30, Kos 85300
Tel: 00 30 242 228 16 they work in animal welfare out there. No email seems to be available.

Please email me
