Topic Dog Boards / Health / Molly's being sick
- By gina [gb] Date 15.09.03 12:44 UTC
Molly has been a little sick each morning for the last 3 days - just a very small amount of frothy bile (sorry!!). She is eating, drinking and perfectly all right in every way (although she seems slightly more tired than normal - but not sure if my imagination?). I was going to take her to the vets if it happens again tomorrow morning - do you think it is okay to wait and see until tomorrow?

Thanks Gina

I would not worry too much, my working cocker used to do the same when he was young, I always presumed he had either eaten something that aggrevated his stomach a bit or it is excess bile from an acidy tummy, the fact it is on the morning before they eat indicates its the fact that the stomach is empty that is causing the problem. It always cleared up and I never felt it was serious enough to take to the vets, but then again I have three spaniels and if I took them to the vet every time they ate rubbish that didn't aggree with them then I would live there. I always think that if she is happily eating, drinking and going to the toilet then it can't be anything major. Some bio yoghurt in her dinner will help regulate bacteria levels in her tummy and should settle it.
I will be interested to hear what your vet thinks it is if you decide to take her.

Hello thanks for the reply.

She was fine this morning and a friend said the same as you last night so I have stopped panicking now. I started feeding the two dogs earlier as Barney is on a diet and was hungry but I shall keep a bit back now to give them a bit later to help with the empty stomach.

Many thanks Gina :p

Took Molly to vet tonight as she has been sick 5 out of the last 7 mornings -although not today - and he thinks she has something which has upset the lining on her stomach so he has given her Antepsin liquid to drink. She also has another hot spot and he has given her antibiotics for it. She has recently started licking her feet and he thinks it is either because of the hot spot or her stomach as she doesnt normally do this. Hope it works cos dont want it to become a habit. Will let you know. Otherwise she is her normal noisy happy self :)

PS Dizzy, Barney has lost nearly a kilo - so getting there

My whippet has exactly the Molly. My vet gave me the antepsin as well and to be honest it hasn't really helped that much, but he said just to give it if her stomach seems to be giving him grief but by then it seems too late and he will still be sick - how often are you recommended to give it? I just make sure he always has meals at regular times - 1 in the morning and 1 late evening and that seems to do the trick. His is always in the morning also. But the other day I didn't give him any brekky and he started cramping up by about 6pm - so i think it is over acid production. Apparently they sometimes grow out if it, my whippet gets it about every 2 weeks but now he is older he is not always sick just a bit uncomfortable.

Hope Molly gets better, I wouldn't worry too much but the worse thing is that because the dog knows that they are going to be sick they wind themselves up. My vet also said it was quite common

Good luck with molly

Hi Gina, same thing happened to my Bonnie several yrs ago, tho she was doing it each afternoon. Vet said put her on ch/rice for week but it came back. Then he said do it again cos she was eating & acting normal no temp or anything, but it still came back & he did an endoscopy & he found a small piece of plastic embedded in her tum that had to be removed. Don`t want to worry you but it`s something you may like to suggest if it doesn`t stop.

Christine, Spain.

Hi Gina

What you are describing is very common. As others have said it is because of the stomach being empty and when they get up in the morning they bring up a little bit of yellow bile. My dogs do it occasionally if I hadn't fed them late the night before. Can you give your dog something like a Bonio to go to bed with so she has something in her stomach overnight? That's what most people do. I really dont' think it's anything more sinister. IT is also more common with dogs fed on a raw diet as the meat is digested that much quicker than those dogs fed on commercial foods which tend to sit in the stomach longer. If she was being sick throughout the day or wretching I would be worrying, but I dont' think what the vet is giving you will do any good, but a late meal before bed or a biscuit to go to bed with will.

Best wishes

Jen

Hiya, thank everyone for your help.

Hi Wheelarch - Molly has the antepsin last thing and night and an hour before her morning feed.

Hi Christine - long time no see :) - She wasnt sick this morning so hope she hasnt swallowed anything but will keep an eye on her.

Hi Powergen - I will do as you suggest and give her a small treat at bedtime, I think this will help a lot. Molly is fed on nature diet but we were feeding her earlier to help Barney but a small treat wont hurt him before he goes to bed. :) They are used to eating at the same time.

Has anyone ever tried to get a shih tzu's mouth open? It just clamps shut LOL. We have found this morning that the best way to give the antepsin (she hates it) is to put it in a little amount of natural yoghurt to hide the taste - the tablets go in a couple of melted choc drops and frozen for a minute!!
