Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / 4 year old Bulldog with eating disorder?
- By guest [gb] Date 13.09.03 22:41 UTC
My Bulldog is now 4 and since i have had him he never eats his food out of a bowl
Ihave tried different size bowls but all he does is push the food around and out on
to the floor and then eats it. Can anyone please advise me on why and what i can do to stop this.

Hi

Have you tried raising the bowl from the floor? Or putting his food down on a dinner plate?

One of my grandfathers dogs did the same thing BUT would only eat from a dinner plate or sometimes from the floor.
At least he is eating so i wouldnt worry too much.

My dog has the same problem ,this is the only main prob i have with her, she wont eat out of her bowl or a plate , she wont eat dog food of the floor only out of your hand , but she will eat frolics off the floor. id like her to eat properly out of a bowl.
when we go away the people who look after her get worried cuz she wont eat , even when theres another dog there. infact she will take a bono and put it in the other dogs mouth. or put piles of dry food infront of the cats feet.
on many occasions ive bought those ready cooked pork rolls/ all sorts of stuff from the cooked counter. will she eat them nooo. yet if you put a pile of veg in a bowl she will woof it down or even fruitor salad. Help i think my dogs a veggy.the vet said shes a fab weight, and she can eat any kinds of veg and salad and fruite as long as its not citrus .
Anyone got any ideas what to do? is frolics plus her veg enough. i know it says frolics is a complete meal but what do you think?

hi

if shes thrieving on it can't see a problem ,sounds quite a healthy diet to me,only she knows why she does'nt like eating out of a bowl you could try a really large bowl with short sides then the food does'nt end up piled on top of its self maybe thats what they don't like like ,its hard to breathe and eat with your nose stuck in a pile of food especially for flat nosed breeds, you can get these bowls in most pet stores.

Hi Lovelylady

I think your dog is trying to tell you something!! - It prefers the diet that dogs were meant to eat in the way they were meant to eat it rather than commercial pet food in a dish.

Dogs are carnivores - if left in the wild they would live on small prey animals they could catch, grass, raw veg and fruit. I think perhaps you've got a clever dog there that knows better than us humans what is better for it to eat. Why not try your dog on a natural diet - feed quantities of RAW not cooked poultry, including the bones (bashed with a mallet) with raw (but pulped) veggies and see what happens then.

If a dog enjoys its food its hardly likely to want to play about with it - bit like kids really.

ive tried raw meat. nope shes not having any of it .she will have the bone though, if i put dog food on the floor she wont eat it. only frolics,
she eats loads of grass when were out and shes been wormed so its not that. she loves everykind of veg,and fruit ,but i know she has to have some kind of meat so im always trying new things, they all seem to fail , before they brought out frolics which have only been out a year and a bit i was worried she wasent eating enough, thank god they did:) i have no idea whats in them that she likes ive tried those new bakers complete moist ones , nope she dont like them and those other ones crunchy on the outside moist inside no luck,
Well shes a decent weight so im not worried for now , but mabe next year when she has a litter , i dont know if she will eat well enough

Does your dog show any special interest in what you are eating? If she/he doesn't like the BARF type diet she might prefer cooked food that humans eat. If there is something in particular she's interested in try making up an extra portion for your dog and offering that, in a bowl, that you hold in front of your dog. Whatever you offer, if your dog doesn't eat it within a couple of minutes remove the food and don't offer more of anything else until next mealtime. Always take any food away if not eaten quickly and maybe your dog will think - if I don't eat now I'm going to get hungry soon - and eat whats offered.

I don't think many dogs will starve themselves but I guess a lot can get very picky over what they eat if we pander to their little foibles. In the end it may be that all your dog really likes is frolic and veggies and if that's got all the goodness in your dog needs I wouldn't worry. What has your vet said??
