Ihave a 2 yr old dalmation wich is losing his hair in places any ideas what may be the cause of this

Which places is he losing his hair? There are many causes of hair loss - what does your vet say it could be?

Just on the one side? Has he been near a heat source? What does his skin look like?

no he has not been near any heat he seems to be losing his hair and the skin underneath is really pink. it is very rare he is near any other dogs so i dont think he has picked up anything it is possible it may be an allergy of some sort.

does he go where foxes go.? could be some form of disease from them

Could be thyroid problem, best to get it checked.

took charlie to vet yesterday put him on steroids and antibiotics they said it could be he was allergic to something trial and error to find out what

Having him allergy tested would be quicker and better for the dog than trial and error!

vet said it may be that he has been bitten by a flea and gave me stronghold to put on him as well as steroids & antibiotics I have to take him back next week to see if the treatment is working if not maybe they will do an allery test then. I did say that he does not have fleas and he agreed but said one could have jumped on him while out walking and bit him and he has had an allergic reaction to this.gratefull for any advice on the subject.
