I am interested to find out a bit more about the Buccleuch labs. I've seen their website but would be interested to hear from anyone who has a Buccleuch. Are they bigger than average labs. What lines do they carry? John, do you know anything about them?
Cheers, Lorna :)

I used to know 2 of them when my father worked for the Duke, but those two were purely housepets. I wouldn't have said they were big, though.

Buccleuch Labradors!!! What a kennel! One of the founders of the Labrador retriever! Anna’s first is Buccleuch Ned, born 1882. As far as I’ve been able to establish she has 24 Buccleuch Labradors in her pedigree, all between 1882 and 1899. I had no idea the affix was still in use until you said Lorna!

As to lines, Ned was our of Malmesbury June by Malmesbury Sweep. Buccleuch Sailor was the grand sire of Flapper, the very first Labrador field trials winner.

Regards, John

John, I remember Buccleuch Jubilee, born (unsurprisingly!) in 1977. Nice black.

I'm trying to find my Lab Club members list. I can find no mention in the URC membership list. It's got me interested now. This was one of the very first affexes along with Lord Grimston, Netherby, Munden and Malmesbury. All of these were at the turn of the 19th century and before Labradors were accepted bt the KC in 1903. In the International Gundog League field trial in 1904, Munden Single was the only Labrador taking part. Owned by the Hon. A Holland-Hibbert she distinguised herself by taking the certificate of merit. This was a three day stake and the prize money for the winning dog, the Flatcoat, Don of Grewin, was £35!!!

Best wishes, John

Bet he was a lovely boy anyway :D
As you mentioned he's not like a modern Flatcoat, have Labs changed much in that time too? Or is it just certain breeds ?

Labradors have changer a lot. It was not unusual to find black ond white Labs in those days! Most dogs in trials were Flatcoats with the occasional Curly. Just a few years later and it was running 50/50 with the Labs.

Thanks for the info John. I did trace Tess's pedigree back and I think it went right back to Duke of Malmesbury's labs. She had Bramshaw Bob and Banchory Ben somewhere way back as well, as I should imagine a lot of other labs have. The thing that interested me with Buccleuch is that they've only ever been used for working and not for showing.
p.s. not doggy but having been to the Highlands two weeks ago just thought you might like to know of a very biddable single malt we got called 'Glen Ord'. Never drunk scotch before but I've found it quite pleasant as a nightcap.
:) ;)

Bramshaw Bob of Banchory, 1929, by Inglestone Ben out of Bramshaw Brimble! What glorious names these old dogs had! Peter The Painter, Guess when he was born! Prudence Of Tibshelf, I'd love to name a bitch Prudence one day.

You are in Anna's pedigree with those Lorna :)

Best wishes, John

PS. I shall be watching for that malt as well! ;)

Hi Dudley, if you can get hold of MCLRC Yearbook 2002 you can find a beautiful colour photo of a lovely Buccleuch bitch. Please feel free to contact her owner and ask more.
